Becoming an actor
4 2020-05-07 by jakefa123
Hi, watching some recent films (La La Land in my case), it has suddenly implanted itself in my head that I want to become and actor because that film inspires me so much. I’m 17 now and have to decide what/if I want to do/go to university. I’ve been leads in school plays before when I was about 11 but that’s about it, I haven’t ever done anything out of school. So my question is, how hard is it to become an actor without a degree or something similar? If I possibly want to take it up after university? Thanks

r/ChapoTrapHouse is filled with Russian actors. I think they must be getting paid for the quality they're putting out. Maybe start there?

I thought I could, once. That was a long time ago.
Those pigs just wanted me on the casting couch.

He's mentoring young dramautists like yourself.
18 CantWakeUpJPG 2020-05-07
He said he's trying to find someone that can handle his huge knowledge about the genre. Maybe you could be that person?
But be aware, his drama dialogues are very long. You might want to train your mouth a bit before trying.

Best way to do it is to drop everything and move to hollywood. You'll get discovered in no time, and be a huge success.
Or you'll be selling your bussy on the street for cat food, either one 😂

You need to make sure you stand out.
Take Tiger King for example. Why is he famous?
Because he chose to live as a g ay man with a harem of straight teens and dangerous jungle cats.
You also need something that draws the eye like an extremely vibrant outfit or a costume made of meat.
At least that how's I became the most famous caterer in Hollywood.
17 ramen_poodle_soup 2020-05-07
Hey, I was in your position too. I really wanted to be an actor, so I put my heart and soul into it. Did drama school and everything, got a few commercial gigs too. Long story short, I now sell used Kias for a living.

16 canipaybycheck 2020-05-07
Lmao but seriously /r/findareddit
edit: We are mostly unpaid actors here.
You should ask the people who get paid for their work. For example the jannies here are surely being paid for all their hard work.

3 ICaughtAPigeonOnce 2020-05-07
realistically? it's an unrealistic expectation.
most actors who "make it" only got to where they are because they were already connected.
Now that's not to say it's the only way to be a succesful actor, but you definitely have the odds stacked against you, heavily.

First thing you need to do is a character study. I really suggest learning about the fine folks at lncels.co. Learn about them, study their philosophy, embody it. You have to become the character in order to succeed.

You idiots post links to anything that matches up with your gay ass drama buzzwords. I don’t get how the circlejerk of regulars don’t get bored of this place but I guess that is because of their incredibly low mental capacity. Everytime I watch a movie I think about how acting is easy and I could probably do it better. I don’t mean all actors are bad at it, but if you watch the mainstream schlock trash movies that make billion$ like marvel capeshits, the acting is garbage. Just be hot and suck some 🇮🇱 dick and you can be a movie star

Join local theatre once this virus is over. I work in one, and when you’re beginning, it’s some of the best experience in terms of raising your abilities that you can get.
And also nowadays, it helps immensely to become versed in other related fields like writing, directing, and editing.
And try to be a crew member on something, so you can learn to appreciate actors who aren’t completely full of themselves.

Acting is all about networking, even more so than other fields. I'd recommend checking out your local theatres to seecif you can get any placements or shadow an actor or something. If you're thinking about going to uni then choose a degree that's not about acting as a backup in case it doesn't work out.
1 Gilliex 2020-05-07
Honestly, becoming a professional actor is very much a moon shot. Go to college and learn something occupational that will still interest you. While there do some recreational acting and make some friends. Graduate, get a job in a small town outside of the big cities and just immerse yourself in amateur community theatre. Aim to live the comfy life, there's more self-worth to be found there than in chasing fame.

Competition is enormous, opportunities relatively few, pay can be decent but is infrequent/uncertain. Only pursue this in parallel with something else -- make sure you get experience & qualifications in something that gives you reasonable income security. Poverty and continuous professional uncertainty are no fun.
1 snallyfagster 2020-05-07
Unironically there are probably small acting groups you can join if you're not in some shithole state like California or New York. Not sure how much money they'd help you make but hey it's acting.
1 MagicHoudini 2020-05-07
it's gonna be hard but you can do it, especially if you can netwrok well enough or you fill some niche character role.
Look up some local drama groups/schools, and treat it like work already, it will be easier
