'powermods' spend a lot of time working together and generally know that they can trust one another to put in the hours & make good judgment calls.....it's not really as shady as you think.

i'd wager good money it's just a hobby for most of them. i don't mod reddit but i've been involved in other social platforms and the vast majority of people i worked with really gave a shit about their communities & responsibilities. the ones who saw it as an opportunity to be exploited rarely lasted long.
