Financial Times is a great source for news because their subscribers take the accuracy of their news in account when making investments. Their accuracy is what's keeping them in business, so succumbing to bias means they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

This is both irrelevant and not a very good argument. The financial times being slightly less horrible than the rest of the organization doesn't absolve the whole organization. In addition to that you've misunderstood the financial times' role, they aren't Bloomberg terminals or a hedge fund, their survival isn't based on how good their stock advice is or how accurate their data is but how many subscriptions they sell. Mad money was very successful for a long time but gave absolutely useless advice.

News organizations weren't much better than this in the past. There's always been agendas and social missions. Even the strong biases we're seeing today aren't anything new.

Sure, polarization feeds into this whole process and we've been seeing a lot of that in recent times. But this isn't some sort of new phenomenon.

I do agree that a value-neutral news organization would be a nice thing to have. But I also think that it would be very difficult to run one.

And it's not like "truth" is such an easy thing to uncover. A news story without the proper contextual information may be both entirely accurate and entirely deceptive. Just choosing to cover one type of story over another is biased. RT does a lot of stories about racism in the US. Does that make them more truthful? Even if their intention is to further political and social polarization in the US?

You can be completely committed to the truth and, in your own ignorance, obscure it.

Even in science it's incredibly difficult. It's a challenge.

Look, there is a difference between innate human bias that obscures the truth from those who seek it and literal editorial decisions to try and bend the truth to fit an ideological framework. As I said before, you cannot serve two masters, if you're serving the truth and fall short that is acceptable bias. If you're serving ideology as a news outlet then your organization should be burned to the ground, the land where it stood should be salted so that nothing can grow from its corruption and a monument should be erected to warn others of your folly.
