i think it looks like he heard mccartney walking by and went to give him a handshake/low five and when he did mccartney didnt notice and it just so happened to be when the mic stand fell. because if you look at his hand, he doesn't catch the mic with his hand, his hand is in the shape of a handshake and the mic stand kind of just plops down on his arm
