Don't use social media for personal stuff and was late in the tiktok game but every time I try to check it's either cringy not funny zoomers or people pining over a girl of questionable age doing something inappropriate for her age.

Maybe? The government can definitely shut down an app for national security reasons (e.g. an app showing the locations of nuclear missle silos), but it's unclear whether TikTok actually poses a genuine threat. Well, aside from the threat of being a safe haven for pedophiles. It's indisputably that.

In any case, the United States doesn't have the infrastructure to ban an app at the network level, the way India and China do. And if the government tried that, it'd almost certainly be illegal. So the most they can really do is force ByteDance to sell off Musical.ly and restructure in a way that separates their Chinese interests from their American interests. And if ByteDance refuses, the government could potentially force Google and Apple to remove any and all ByteDance apps from their stores. But you'd still be able to download the .apk or .ipa directly, so it's not really a ban. That said, the average Zoomer doesn't know jack shit about finding programs that aren't on Google Play or the App Store, so it would effectively kill TikTok in America.
