Anime is weird degenerate media, made for weird degenerates, by weird degenerates. It's why it's one of the most wacky/inventive forms of media but also one of the most socially-inappropriate. It's basically an entire industry of schizos and autists that wouldn't be employable anywhere else. There's no way this could surprise you.
This reminds me of the github drama from years back -- I think it was about outsiders joining projects and trying to enforce a code of conduct? People claiming to have huge amounts of programming experience asserting that it was very common for project members to implement and adhere to strict in-group social justice rules.

That's only in the last 15 years or so, when otaku gain more power in the industry, and when anime went more mainstream. Miyazaki even hates otaku, Anno hates otaku . Anime is in a bad place right now, and it's not gonna get any better any time soon. And not because of harems but because the industry is losing real artist and replacing it with meme loving r-slurs westerners just more otaku. Globalization is also fucking up the industry as it takes away from the japan centric media it was to now watered down global shows. It started in the mid 2000s as reveneue started to sink like a rock because of a changing media market, classic anime like FLCL used to rely on dvd sales, for example, that revenue source is now gone. So otaku and waifufags whete the only ones who bought anything, so the market went that way. Nowdays we probably have one good anime every 2 years, maybe.
The github drama still happens. The most recent round comes from the 2020 BLM stuff and tries to change software terminology like master/slave, blacklist/whitelist etc. Openssl (an important library used by all sorts of things) recently voted against such changes. But there was a fair bit of drama leading up to it.
I watched that whole anime, even when you get past all the degenerate and uncomfortable parts it still has no appeal at all.
Like the entire plot revolves around the main characters being smarter than anyone else and destroying everyone in card games. Really regretting those nukes rn.

The problem is that it is not watching even if you have a large comfort zone (I've found watching the subtitled version without sound is easier because the voice acting is usually disgusting).
The plot takes giant leaps constantly while feeling like nothing happens, there is just nothing of any value in this series, even the lightheartedness is ruined by their attempt to be serious and edgy.
