I was using WASP to mean Protestants of English descent. This term has expanded to include all protestants from Northwestern Europe, and was probably the first instance of the pan-ethnic white identity in the US. Germans were viewed with hostility when they emigrated in the early 19th century, but had established themselves as "white" by whatever term you want to use by the late 19th century. Irish/Italians/Jews started arriving in the late 19th century. The "ASP" was dropped as the identifier of white identity when people who definitely weren't Anglo-Saxon (or even Germanic) or Protestant were included.
It depends upon intermarriage and how long they have been in the US. You have Italian and Jewish families who married within their communities and may be 3rd or 4th generation in this country but can identify with their European ancestry rather than the pan-ethnic White identity. Other groups are similar; Irish, Polish, Greek, etc communities that behave the same way. If you can still call yourself Italian or Jewish or Irish or whatever, that means there was little intermarriage.
But once intermarriage starts, the kids adopt whatever identity seems to fit. For instance, Catholics intermarried fairly early. You'll have people who are some mix of Italian/Irish/Polish starting a few generations back. They do not identify with their mixed ethnicity, but rather a "White" or "Catholic" identity.
