That article has no real point does it? In the series Beth is consumed first by her new life, then the chess life^TM and her success. The little we learn about the other people in her life fits the whole story as she climbs higher through the ranks.

She abandons Harry after he cant teach her more, she has a fallout with Benny when she gets too arrogant and hooked on alcohol (after hooking up with both of them etc. !< I would argue that the little we learn about the stories of those people mirrors how little she cares in those times about anything but getting better in chess. Then she hits rock bottom and the sudden appearance of Jolene telling her about the death of her first chess teacher reminds her of the start of that life (and what came before) which is what really pulls her out especially cause she never realized till then that some people from her past never forgot her and that she actually needs and wants people in her life.
