Sending prayers to the Prophet, peace be upon him is prescribed by Quran.
Allah has commanded Muslims to bless the Prophet, peace be upon him, whenever we say or read his name in a religious context and using an abbreviation takes that way from the reader and contractadicts what God has commanded.
