Will use a recent example. Bill Burr a heterosexual white man makes a joke about how feminists are going to hate him for presenting an award for Latino artists. Predictably that is what happened. The joke was those claiming to be for equality are not. Instead of taking it as a joke they became frenzied. In their pursuit to cancel bill burr they did not do what he and his fans did which was appreciate Latino Artists. They made it about themselves.
