Sharks rarely kill people because they're not designed to chew on bones, so when they clamp down on someone and hit a bone they go "ah, hell, dafuq is this?" Normally, they let go after that. The only time you're really in trouble is if the shark that bit you is huge, in which case it will pretend to be a fat kid and just swallow you without chewing, or if the shark is so small that it can't bite deep enough to hit bone, in which case you'll be like the poor bastard I saw at Jax beach one time limping out of the surf with a small shark latched onto his thigh.
In either case, you should stay out of the water at the beach if sharks worry you because sharks live in the surf along the beach until they reach roughly 16'-20' in length, so the water by the beach is full of them.
I only know this because I had an associate that did coastal surveys for the government, and because this is part of my whole "fountain of useless information" schtick.
