Rightoids care a lot about projecting an image of being big tough and masculine. The military as an institution throughout much of human history has, understandably, been a bastion of masculinity. In spite of this not really hampering the effectiveness of the military it is seen by a lot of rightoids to be an attack on what they view to be a core part of the institution.
