It’s Rwhitegoose’s iconic speedrun rant

The context is that DarkViperAu is a YouTube streamer that specialises in GTA V speed/challenge runs. Some of his stuff is pretty interesting but he gets into drama easily due to his argumentative, overly dramatic personality. Recently he’s been trying to do the whole game without ever getting hit, but recently someone beat him to it using his strategies

He responded to this by blacklisting the runner from being mentioned in his discord, having a 20 minute rant on stream calling him a scum fuck for not sharing strategies with him. His mindset essentially is that this run takes away the accomplishment he would’ve gotten from being the first to finish the game without getting hit. There’s also a detail and this is in the video linked where there’s a section he sort of laments that since it’s not a speedrun category there’s no incentive to check a run to make sure the person isn’t cheating. So the guy is incredibly disrespectful and salty that someone got there first, despite that as a more popular figure his run is likely to overshadow the first. A memorable quote from the audio is something along the lines of “why would I want to associate with [the runner who beat me]?” as a justification for banning someone from his discord for beating him in a video game. In response to the run DVAU posted this comment to areSpeedrun (this is the full thing):

I shouldn't publicly comment, but allow me to explain.

I have known for quite some time other people were doing runs of this category. People who could run everyday, from dawn til dusk. People who had no need to be entertaining, had fewer obligations, and fewer distractions.

Sharing of information with these people was almost entirely one sided, or at the very least everything I developed for the run was public knowledge but the inverse was not true. The result was that anyone running alongside me was getting far more information about what was needed to be done and what was needed to be avoided. They additionally had a rich foundation to build off for their runs, something I lacked when I started, meaning anyone who begun later was far ahead compared to where I was when I began. Strats were developed by me that were used by others, while I was given at best limited information about anything anyone else learned or developed. Anyone who shared so little in a speedrunning context would be ostracized and disparaged by everyone within the community.

With this knowledge of being one versus a horde, I was under far more pressure to finally complete a run that I had already completed segmented half a year ago and that I was a mere 1 damage from completing for the first time 4 months ago. If I knew that if I failed to be first everyone would know, it would be the first thing people would comment. This was true for literally no one else alive.

The continued knowledge that I was running at a disadvantage with a quickly running out clock caused me to prioritize doing runs even when I should have been recovering from illness or fulfilling other obligations. In my attempt to beat this clock I suffered mentally, physically, financially, and even in terms of people perception of my character. People would spam "take a break" at me all day, knowing nothing of this context. It was my own little personal hell. I of course did have to do some things other than OHKO runs but I could not fully enjoy or avoid stress and guilt whilst away from the runs for even a day.

One could imagine your completion of this run would have been a relief, this is not so. Ultimately all the suffering I went through now matters far less. An achievement I coveted can now never be obtained regardless of what I do. The eons that I have fallen behind in speedrunning, potentially to never recover, were spent on a quest that can never be completed.

Given this context, what sort of response did you expect from me upon your success? A hug? Your success here does me no favours, on the contrary, it makes my life considerably worse with the added fun that I will need to field questions about this from dawn til dusk. Why on earth would I want to associate with someone who took a solved category and hoarded optimizations for months until they beat the current best? Again, if you did this for any speedrun with an active community people would rightly spit on you.

Obviously you can conduct yourself in whatever way you see fit, and do whatever you see fit, but similarly I can do the same. I have no obligation to like you, cheer you, or associate with you in any capacity. I will exercise this right, and continue to attempt to self-ostracize myself from the wider internet. I obviously will continue to do runs because I am in a unique situation where completing this challenge actually holds meaning to other people and I will not leave those who have watched my progress high and dry without a conclusion.

I hope this explanation leads to some understanding, even if not agreement.

Backlash has led to DarkViper deleting the comment, and this video here has been posted two weeks after all this and DVAU is still trying to justify his outbursts. I’d recommend tracking down the LSF thread on this for more information, don’t post in it. The scum fuck audio I linked is very interesting too I recommend listening to the first five minutes to get an idea of how DVAU reacted unscripted

After DVAU posted his video today there’s still new comments on the two week old LSF posts from his fans:

The runner called 'UnNameD' was banned because he was fucking gloating about finishing GTA5 without taking damage in DarkViperAU's discord while Dark Viper just wanted to be left alone because he wasted a year of his life just for a nobody to do it first

Everyone here lambasting Matt, calling him a “manbaby” and “narcissist” whilst being exactly fucking that themselves.

I’m going to get downvoted, and I do not care. You people need to grow up.

Literal no name does an extremely difficult speedrun without live video proof, no speedrunning history and clearly subpar gameplay. Streamer who worked on the speedrun for over a year bans him from his own private discord server.

He has acted as any person who had something who had what they had been working on for a year and a half. Imagine working on completing something for a year and a half and some person that like no one knows does it before you do. You would obviously be very sad about that. And every time you try moving on and doing your thing the person who got it before you is gloating on YOUR discord server. Obviously, it was a bit bad to ban him but nothing too unreasonable considering it was his personal server. He also didn't ban him from a major speed-running server he is an admin of. If darkviper banned him from all discord servers about speedrunning he's a part of that would be bad but what he has done is pretty reasonable and I am confused why so many people are so upset.

Yeah make fun of him for having an ego about playing video g*mes quickly but getting banned from his discord isn’t a loss at all. You need to register your phone number on discord in order to even join his server anyway so it’s not worth it
