EU enacts ban on anonymous crypto transactions via self-custody wallets

The recent Anti-Money Laundering legislation specifically outlaws certain limits for cash transactions and anonymous cryptocurrency payments.

In a recent regulatory change, the European Union (EU) has prohibited cryptocurrency transactions of any value made through unidentified self-custody crypto wallets. This update is a component of the region's newly implemented Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations.

According to a post by Patrick Breyer, a member of the European Parliament for the Deutsch Piraten Partei, the majority of the EU Parliament's lead commission endorsed the prohibition on March 19.

Notably, Dr. Breyer is one of the two leaders who opposed this approval. Gunnar Beck was the other Parliament member who voted against it, representing the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The ban on cryptocurrency payments applies specifically to unregistered wallets offered by service providers (hosted wallets), covering self-custody wallets provided via mobile, desktop, or browser applications.

The recent Anti-Money Laundering legislation specifically outlaws certain limits for cash transactions and anonymous cryptocurrency payments. Under these regulations, cash transactions exceeding €10,000 and anonymous cash payments over €3,000 will be deemed illegal.

The approved laws are expected to be fully operational within three years from their entry into force. However, Dillon Eustace, an Ireland law firm expects these laws to become fully operational before the usual enforcement timeline.

Fundamentally, many cryptocurrency networks function within permissionless environments, allowing anyone to create a cryptographic private key and granting unrestricted entry into the system.

This characteristic lies at the heart of cryptocurrencies' fundamental principles, offering a more inclusive, liberated, and equitable financial system that does not discriminate against its users in any form.

Experts and freedom advocates consider this recent approval a hit against financial freedom and fundamental human rights. German MEP Patrick Breyer opposes the bill, claiming it compromises economic independence and financial privacy. He considers the ability to transact anonymously to be a fundamental right.

The crypto sector, known for its emphasis on privacy and decentralization, has responded critically to the EU's regulatory measures. These new regulations have created mixed reactions, whereby some believe the new AML laws are necessary, while others fear they may infringe on privacy and hinder economic activity.

Daniel “Loddi” Tröster, the Sound Money Bitcoin Podcast host, underscored the practical hurdles and consequences of the recent legislation, elaborating on the impact on donations and the broader implications for cryptocurrency use within the EU. He articulated concerns over the stifling effect these rules might have. Notably, self-custody to self-custody transactions are not affected by the new law.

New Details Emerge In Death Of Sen. McConnell's Sister-In-Law :marseydrunk: | ZeroHedge

Ms. Chao had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.233 percent, almost three times higher than the legal threshold of 0.08 percent for driving in Texas.

Ms. Chao and seven female friends—many with home addresses in New York—had gathered for dinner and drinks at the guest lodge located on Ms. Chao's private ranch, JW Ranch, in Blanco County, Texas.

“They had good conversation throughout the night and all were in good spirits,” the incident report states, according to statements from those present.

As the evening wrapped up, Ms. Chao decided to drive to the main lodge rather than take the short walk from the guest house.

“During our time in the water there were several females screaming at us frantically on the bank.” Mr. Bible wrote in his statement.

Ms. Chao and her husband, who were married in 2012, both have extensive ties to China. Both are Harvard alumni and Mr. Breyer also attended Stanford.

Mr. Breyer is a venture capitalist and longtime investor in China via his company Breyer Capital and as the former co-chair of Beijing-based IDG Capital.

Ms. Chao was one of six independent board members of the Bank of China from Jan. 4, 2017, to June 30, 2022.

Mr. Breyer also sits as a member of an independent task force sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations, a New York-based think tank.

The task force is assembled to “assess issues of critical importance to U.S. foreign policy,” according to the website.

“Task Force members aim to reach a meaningful consensus on policy.”

In a 2022 interview with Techcrunch, Mr. Breyer said he has been very happy to invest in China over the past 16 years, “and I fully am passionate about continuing that for many years.”

Mr. Breyer was chairman of the advisory committee of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management until 2021.

“I'm involved with the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management Advisory Board, which is really a wonderful who's-who list of American executives. I was the chair until a year ago, and Tim Cook is now the chair,” he told Techcrunch.

Controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have been arrested in Romania over allegations of sexual aggression.

The brothers were detained on Monday night on charges that date back to between 2012 and 2015.

They were handed an arrest warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates Court in London - and an investigation is pending.

Andrew, 37, and Tristan, 35, deny all allegations against them. Their representatives said they were "fully committed to challenging these accusations with unwavering determination and resolve".

The brothers are facing r*pe and human trafficking charges in Romania, where they live, and had previously been in jail and later under house arrest since they were detained in December 2022.

They were charged alongside two Romanian women who are accused of being part of the alleged organised crime group.

It is alleged all four formed the group in 2021 to commit human trafficking in Romania and other countries - including the US and UK.

Tate won an appeal in August 2023 to be released from house arrest as he awaits trial on a date which has yet to be decided.

The brothers were told they were able to travel anywhere within Romania but could not leave the country.

In January, a Romanian court also overurned a decision to seize Tate's assets, which saw him regain access to his supercars, properties and designer watches.

Prosecutors said in January last year that they had seized 15 luxury vehicles and more than 10 properties and homes belonging to the suspects to prevent the assets from being sold or hidden.

Fourteen designers watches, two ingots - blocks of usually precious metal - and cash, were also confiscated, with authorities saying at the time the seized property was worth €3.6m (£3.12m).

Tate, a former kickboxer and Big Brother contestant, gained millions of fans on social media in recent years after styling himself as the "king of toxic masculinity".

He has 8.9 million followers on X, formerly Twitter, but has been banned on several other platforms including TikTok for his misogynistic views.

Victor Sharrah had always had sharp vision. But one life-altering day in November 2020, he noticed out of the blue that people's faces around him looked demonic.

Their ears, noses and mouths were stretched back, and there were deep grooves in their foreheads, cheeks and chins.

“My first thought was I woke up in a demon world,” said Sharrah, 59, of Clarksville, Tennessee. “You can't imagine how scary it was.”

Someone he knew taught visually impaired people and suggested he might have prosopometamorphopsia, or PMO. The extremely rare neurological disorder of perception causes faces to appear distorted in shape, size, texture or color. Sharrah felt the symptoms were a match, and he was formally diagnosed last year.

The distortions appear only when he sees people in person — not in photographs or through computer screens.

That gave scientists an opportunity to visualize what the warped faces look like for a person with PMO, something they had never been able to do before. Researchers at Dartmouth College created a digital representation of what Sharrah has been experiencing. The resulting images were published Thursday in The Lancet.

To create the visuals, the researchers asked Sharrah to describe the differences between photographs of people's faces and the real-life people standing in front of him. The researchers then used image-editing software to modify the pictures to match Sharrah's description.

PMO symptoms often resolve after a few days or weeks, though in some cases they can linger for years. Sharrah said he still sees demonic faces.

There are fewer than 100 published case reports of PMO. Researchers suspect it is caused by dysfunction in the brain network that handles facial processing, though they don't fully understand what triggers the condition. Some cases have been linked to head trauma, stroke, epilepsy or migraines, but other people have PMO without obvious structural changes in their brains.
