Weekly Anime Post 54

Well, this week I watched netflixs' 'Cyberpunk Edgerunners' and it was alright, if you want something short to watch Id recommend it.

Afterwards I was in the mood for more cyberpunk shit, and I rewatched bladerunner 2049 which is not an anime. I also watched 'Serial Experiments Lain' and I honestly dont really know what to make of it, so if you watched it definitly share your thoughts about it here.

Idk if its because Im r-slurred, drunk or because the anime is just made that way, but a lot of stuff that happened just seemed pointless and only tangentially connected to the plot. Honestly, after watching it I wonder what even happened in those 13 episodes.

For example, wtf was wrong with the sister? Or what was the deal with her whole family anyway? Who put her in that family if she is just a program? I guess it was the god dude? And were her family all just programs too?

What would even have happened if the wired and the real world connected? Apparently she already has godlike powers in the real world anyway.

This is just some random stuff that came to my mind as I type this out. That doesnt mean I didnt enjoy the anime, because I did, but it just feels like they wanted to send some deep message about life and came of a bit pretentious I guess.

The core message of Evangelion, imo, is personal relationships will inevitably cause you to be hurt by and to hurt those you care about at some point, but you can't derive any true happiness from attempting to avoid that hurt and live in your own escapist, idealised world.

Edgerunners was good. Quite pretty to look at; story was cliche but fine. I'm not into the whole hyper capitalist dystopia, and punk aesthetics though, but for people who are I'm sure it's amazing.

My feelings on Serial Experiments Lain are that if I had have watched it 20 years earlier it would have blown my mind. Unfortunately, I watched it after many of its themes had been thoroughly explored through its derivatives. All that was left for me was to go, "Huh, that sure was ahead of its time." I don't remember much of the specifics cuz it was kinda boring lol

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah, I liked edgerunners for the capitalist dystopia stuff. Its pretty much the theme that makes the whole genre for me tbh.

Lain is definitly pretty long and kinda boring I guess, hence why I said I dont even know what happened in those 13 episodes. But yeah, considering its nearly 25 years old it definitly had an interesting outlook on technology and the future.

Still plugging away at Victory Gundam. I am really tired of one character who has been kidnapped like 4 times and is always like "But If I ask them to stop killing people they will stop!" Which totally is going to lead to the death of one character I like, and has lead to the deaths of others I actually like.

I wasn't a huge Paranoia Agent fan either, it was watchable but not great. The animation was just kinda empty and the story didn't do it for me. I think I'm just not the biggest fan of Kon in general, and his other works like Perfect Blue are better than this one anyway.

Her family was fake put there to watch over her because she's like an experiment. You should watch Texhnolyze, its the best cyberpunk anime.

I watched both blade runners recently they were very good. Watching 2049 in theaters without having seen the original was a total waste of my time.

I started watching 'ergo proxy' anime and I have no opinions yet. It's also cyberpunk and mid 2000's though, which is my style.

Funny, I just recently wanted to watch texhnolyze but put it off again, I probably will next then.

If her family is fake then who put her there though? Thats what I dont get. And whos experiment is she?

I watched 2049 before the original and I liked it a lot still. I only watched the original once but 2049 a few times already. I just love the atmosphere of the film, plus it had those great, depressig pictures.

watch it bro it like unironically says deep stuff about society, I swear I could write so many fricking words about that show. Imagine s. e. lain but it's actually structured into a plot and a world with characters and organizations instead of entirely abstract symbolism.

If her family is fake then who put her there though? Thats what I dont get. And whos experiment is she?

She, or at least her physical being in situation in her family, was the work of Masami Eiri. His plan was to use his limited power over the wired to create her, who would then bring him total control. This is the "prophecy" that was to be fulfilled, which is what her sister Mika was harassed over. Her family was probably created entirely by Eiri, so Mika started malfunctioning when situations arose that she could not cope with.

There is one episode where they talk about the "Gaia Consciousness" which is the consciousness of the world in aggregate created by the interaction of each individual as if they were a single neuron. My interpretation is that lain is that being (fairly implied by the show from what I remember) and also that Eiri did not actually create her completely by himself, but instead took this preexisting sleeping entity and woke it up, giving it a name and a physical form, and a (hastily constructed) place in the world. This second part is not really implied, but it's the way of interpreting things that I find to make the most sense, especially given the part in the end where Eiri is distraught about the possibility of a real god of the world -- clearly, he isn't one, so there shouldn't be any way he could have created Lain himself.

No email address required.

Yeah, I see it mostly the same (regarding lain)

And I will probably start watching texhnolyze tomorrow

As far as I got it she is some kind of program that existed since the begin of the wired and is omnipotent in the wired but then also can use her powers to influence the real world for some reason. And maybe she was created by the god dude idk. Or she is a product of the collective human subconsciousness. Or she is a product of whatever they mean when they say 'humanity used to be connected before'.

Honestly i dont really know and I dont think they actually explained it outright.

she only had godlike powers cause the world was mergering / had merged with Protocol 7 going live - IIRC, it’s been a long time. She used her godlike powers to zero sum herself out of existence along with the codecel. Pretty sure her dad worked at a Wired company, it’s clear he’s addicted to the wired too. I’m pretty sure the sister confounds some people’s theories. I think the easiest explanation is she’s another one of the people who get taken advantage of by Wired hackers/experts (rdrama posters)

lain was slurred i watched the entire thing expecting for the ending to be like a massive gotcha where they pull the rug out under you and all the pieces fall into place at once and it blows you away with a newfound insight that makes all the previous episodes make perfect sense and flow together in a beautiful of storytelling and nothing like that happens it just kinda ends and youre just sitting there. anyone who tries to pass lain off some masterful piece of kino is lying and coping and trying to come across as if they "got it" to make themselves look smarter or something. i didnt regret watching it and the music and set pieces and concepts were interesting but its really not as good as people make it out to be

Finished "Welcome to HNK", great progression from comedy, through SoL into comedy drama. I just love stories where every character is a frick-up.

Watched a few episodes of Trigun while on a few day bike trek, and by watched I mean it played in the background while I was getting hammered ready for another hard day of physical exertion.

Waiting for the 10/10 and the return of Bleach.

The island thing is a bit of a mid-point in terms of a story. I didn't mind the protag — he's annoying because that's his character, you can't tell a story about a frick-up without him being just that. Maybe I'm immune to that side of the story because of things I read (think a /lit/ wash-up).
