The Ranma 1/2 :marseycatgirljanny: remake is surprisingly enjoyable :marseypopcorntime:

I wasn't planning on checking it out initially because remakes are rarely done well :marseysigh: and to be sure this one is indeed not as good as the original. BUT it is not a bland remake like the Kenshin remake or Urusei Yatsura remake :marseyalbino:. It has a cutesy style and its pacing is arguably better than the original. It's more manga accurate which I think helps a lot with the pacing. It's also pretty refreshing to see an MC with some personality in a romcom for once.

Some negatives:

1. The nudity that Ranma 1/2 is famous for is neutered. We are given this weird Barbie doll :barbiecrying: anatomy which is just awkward.

2. The music is lacklustre :marseysigh: . It's not bad, just adequate.

3. Do not expect action choreography like this (although, some of other smaller fights are well animated)

4. While I do like the pacing overall, some moments should've been given more breathing room like they were in the original :marseyagree:.

Still overall, it's a pretty fun watch. I suggest you guys check it out :marseyagree:.

It is more impressive how the jap voice actors are reprising their roles 35 years later and yet still sound the same :bruh:

The weebs on /a/ claim they can tell the difference and complain that their age is noticeable :marseyshrug: but I can't tell the difference tbh. They all sound nice. The dub isn't bad either.

I'm impressed at how both female and male Ranma are extremely r*peable.

Wait for real? I was convinced people wouldn't be able to be normal in 2024 about a plot with a guy turning into a girl. They don't shove any modern shit in there at all?

Yeah, there's no modern shit. Just neutered nudity.

I'm enjoying it too, really like the new OP and it's call backs to the original.

I remember reading awhile ago that some law was passed in Tokyo that banned nipples on TV, and that's why basically every anime has that now. I have no idea if that's true so take it with a grain of salt :marseyshrug:

That's what I've read too. Apparently this has been the law for more than a decade. Only applicable for certain time slots IIRC.

The ED is pretty cutesy too :marseyembrace:.

I miss the old hand drawn shit. This new stuff always feels sterile and soulless to me. It makes everything have a quality of sameness, but maybe I'm just old.

We are most likely never getting those back sadly. Hand drawn cell animation was a product of nippon's economic boom . We won't be getting those unless it's some expensive passion project.
