I used to be a very outspoken atheist until I discovered /r/atheism.

I'm still more of an atheist than ever, but I'm much quieter about it, now that I know how insufferable those people come off.

I used to like having religious arguments with people because it was kind of an easy target to argue against something that has no evidence. idc about insufferable atheists (being insufferable is fun sometimes after all) but I just see religion more now as an emotional cope rather than some evil force and trying to remove someone's emotional cope is kind of mean

I "won" such an argument when I was living in university residence, and when I saw the girl the next day she was an emotional mess, and hadn't slept all night. She'd had her safety blanket pulled out from under her, and didn't know where to go next spiritually. I'm sure she was on that path already, but I felt terrible about how jarringly I tried to convince her to give up her faith.

Yep. There's definitely such a thing as being too "euphoric".

I try to give /r/atheism as much of a break as I can, because I had the luxury of growing up in a non-religious household, so I never had any religious faith to lose, or to rebel against. It must be incredibly stifling to grow up in a religious home, and then infuriating as you gradually figure out that you're being lied to. I like to believe that most /r/atheism users are such people, so I give them a bit of a break if they want to blow off some steam.

I'm just embarrassed by them, as they remind me too much of my own edgelord phase....
