A bit about me (38M).
I was raised in a Christian family and got dragged to church and Sunday School as a kid. I hated it and never believed in God, but was brought up under Christian values and knowing a bunch of Bible lore.
I haven't been a "militant" atheist since my early twenties, but have always believed there is no God.
My grandad is dying, and he's been a devout Christian since he got baptised in his early thirties. I asked him if he could share any life advice, and he said no but that finding God and becoming a Christian was the best thing that ever happened to him.
I'm not sure if that's opened my mind up more to the true nature of God or what, but recently I've started noticing certain things and the concept of "God" has clicked with me -- God as a silent guiding hand who acts through us.
I keep noticing the beauty of things. I keep noticing and being aware of how my actions and speech have an actual impact on events. Like people actually listen to what I say and my words impact them.
When I am stressed and see no way forward, I feel humbled and ask silently to nothingness for help ... and it's been forthcoming.
The atheist in me says this is just human nature at work. But whatever is awakening newly in me says "and that's what God is".
Thoughts? Atheism is the absence of belief and therefore I have no shame in "acquiring" belief and ceasing to be an atheist.
But is this what belief is? Or do people literally believe in a man in the sky?
!christians any thoughts from you would be good as well.

They say this but they are ideologically committed to philosophical materialism.
I would turn you towards classical theism as probably the only way back in for most dramneurodivergents:
You can read more about the different classical conceptions of God here. I will pray for you and wish you the best.

My take on that was always that, while often in life the belief in non-existence is different to belief in existence, with how limited human perception of the universe and it's beginning is, the lack of belief in a greater force responsible for all of it does not bear that distinction. We don't know enough to make a proper judgment either way.

I was brought up atheist and had no real connection with religion other than one religious school I went to, which was sometimes annoying (even now I can say the Lord's Prayer by heart) but was nothing terrible. I was never a militant atheist because I didn't really have much to rebel against. Religion was just this nonsensical thing that existed somewhere in the world that I had no reason to involve myself with. I don't think anything will ever change in that regard. I can't believe in something just because it pokes my emotions in a certain way. Give me some evidence or I'll ignore it.
I have seen typically non-relgious people say some uncharacteristic things though in times of stress, or when someone dies etc they'll start wondering about an afterlife. That's fair enough. Later once the hard times have passed they go back to being unreligious.
I think some people have a tendency to need to 'believe in' a thing. Militant atheists have a similar thinking pattern to religious people and indeed they often go back to their old religion, or switch between different types of magical beliefs throughout their lives. You'll see it a lot in the world of spiritualism too, people involved in that stuff bounce from crystal healing to homeopathy etc without much thought about whether it's all really real. It's just a thing to believe in.

I wish I could believe that humans are important enough for the universe to give a shit about us, but if that's what gets you through the night, then go for it.

The revelation I have had is more like humans -- and all life -- are a manifestation of the universe and of God rather than humans are special to a devine being.
We are special to each other, and that is divine.
I had this epiphany when making eye contact with my dog by the way. My presence made her wag her tail and that made me smile. Therefore, God is real.

I think it cheapens the human experience if we need God in order to feel love. Life is much more precious without it.

Almost all humans throughout history have felt similar - that there is more to life than just what we can see and touch. A big part of prayer is how we lean into and come closer to that. I pray you will find truth in your search.

No it's a very dumbed down view of what god is.
I would recommend you call a church and make an appointment to talk with a priest. I would recommend hearing what they have to say over anyone on this website.
Worst case is you waste an hour or two to get confirmation in your thoughts one way or another.

Atheism is not the absence of belief.
Logical thinking leads to right conclusions.
So you must choose: do you wish to believe in something that is impossible and impersonal, or something that is impossible and personal and loving? There are no alternatives.
