I mean, this is its own thing, but I think for people in general, they can't follow every link and check every fact in what they read; a formal writing style and apparent citations are indicia of reliability.
They're just trivially easy to exploit by ChatGPT and LLMs

One of the chapters in Tocqueville that I sometimes have undergrads read is about the special problem of how to decide what to think under democracy -- easy in aristocracy, because you just follow your betters, but obviously it's impossible for everyone to formulate their own ideas about everything.
