There's been some evidence for some time that the way Reddit handles deleting content is to apply a flag to the content that makes it show up as "deleted".

Not really deleted - just behind an interstitial that keeps unprivileged accounts from seeing it.

Same as with a user-deactivated account — when a user deactivates an account, the splash page for the account says "the user deleted this account" or etc, and the deactivation page says

Once you delete your account, your profile and username are permanently removed from Reddit and your posts, comments, and messages are disassociated (not deleted) from your account.

However, in modmail, searches for the username of a "deleted" account return modmail threads in which that user account participated — making it possible to infer that the [Deleted] user is the user whose username, when searched, returns the modmail.

One of my moderator teams discovered that when we were searching modmail for a particular harassing modmail mentioning a moderator who had subsequently deleted their account, and got back every single user ban message they sent out instead.

This moderator is a US Resident, but I would expect that the European Union might want to investigate and find out whether the same happens for EU residents who GDPR their accounts.

Also the overwrite scripts are practically useless except perhaps in some strictly technical ways; anything put up on this site prior to the API overhaul, it would have been an exception if it hadn't been scraped by multiple third parties. Anyone who hasn't opted out of the right things, after the API overhaul - their posts & comments are still publicly being indexed. Anyone targeted by motivated harassers or bad actors, their content gets scraped anyway (despite this being a federal CFAA violation (stares into the camera)), and with the New Reddit interface, if anyone who hasn't opted out responds to someone who has opted out, well, the parent comment authored by the opt-out user still gets indexed by the search engine, because new reddit shows the context and a helpful "UserXYZ responded to UserGHJ" modal.

And if someone has the URL of a given piece of media, they can retrieve it, logged in or not, member of the subreddit it was submitted to or not. Zero ACL for any uploaded photos; Reddit's solution to kludge in a semblance of privacy and security on that system was to make the generated URL space too large to feasibly fusker, even if the upload time was known.

The 10 years of bigots, harassers, and criminals that inhabited Reddit whilst screaming in bad faith about privacy (and in bad faith about everything else) didn't help anything either,
