Okay, here's my writeup of the Brazilian block order (yes, including the temporary amendment suspending the VPN block). It's still absolutely crazy. No one should be in favor of this. www.techdirt.com/2024/08/30/b...

Brazil Bans ExTwitter In Battle With Musk, Takes VPNs & Users Down With It

Robert Szasz π“…† (@rszasz.bsky.social):

I wonder what would have happened to a social media company in the US that told the DOJ/courts to pound sand when subpoenas were issued over Jan 6th

Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):

Lawsuits and due process would have happened.

Roger Laureano (@rogerlaureano.bsky.social):

It would be nice... if there was a legal rep in Brazil so a lawsuit could even happen.

Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):

There was. But when it turned to threatening to jail the legal rep, that's no longer a "legal rep." That's a hostage.

Roger Laureano (@rogerlaureano.bsky.social):

For not complying with legal decisions, which is, in itself, an illegal act. So there should be a lawsuit, but they shouldn't face the legal consequences of breaking the law?

Robert Szasz π“…† (@rszasz.bsky.social):

Who is breaking the law, if the legal rep has no ability to do the things that would comply, what law are they breaking?

Roger Laureano (@rogerlaureano.bsky.social):

X had the ability to comply, and has already done this in Brazil several times.

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

To be clear: Mike isn't saying that Musk / X is the comparatively sane actor in this scenario. Mike's whole thing is "Governments should cool it with prior restraint & autocracy etc"; He's one of the experts on how governments screw up social media. He leaves it to other people to critique Musk

Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social):

And, I mean, I critique Musk plenty. But just because Musk is terrible it doesn't make this ruling a good one.

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

If it had been Signal, they would have pounded sand until the next time Marlinspike flew internationally and then they would have five-S'd him

Robert Szasz π“…† (@rszasz.bsky.social):

I mean, the most they could really do is ban a username/number, right?

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

the most Signal could do is ban a number, yeah. Which would be pointless.
