There is a concerted effort going on within the Neo con establishment as embodied by things like the Lincoln Project to try and whitewash and downplay if not outright lie about the fact that American white supremacy, Maga and fascism are American constructs they are creating a narrative

That the entirety of the Trump fascist movement and the larger fascist movement that has not just infiltrated, but become the Republican party is a foreign entity that is not American and that is not a direct result of decades of Republican politics and Republican Christianity.

This revisionist and deeply a historic narrative is using Russia as a proxy for the American Republican parties descent into full throated, autocratic fascist beliefs. it is a colonial practice of recuperation that attempts to abs Bzzz and lie about the nature of the conservative threat

It is being used to rehabilitate the Republican party and downplay the clear and present threat of white Christian lead, fascist violence and retreat from Democratic norms. This is a bold strategy, but one that the Lincoln project seems very confident in using to confuse the population
