Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
There is a report circulating that "Unicode 16 contains a Greenwashing emoji".
The claim is made in an outraged press release, a purported blog post by the Unicode consortium, and what appears to be an article in Wired by Cory Doctorow.
All of these are fakes.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
The claim on the blog is hosted on unicodeconsortium.org — the actual blog article on unicode.org shows no emojis, and the actual unicode consortium does not specify full colour reference renderings of emojis in their standard, nor commission them
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
Who are unicodeconsortium.org? WHOIS shows it to have been registered originally in mid-August of this year via Njalla Okta, a notorious privacy shield registrar for piracy. Unicode.org has been registered since 1992.
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
The press release is hosted on sealng.org, and the purported Cory Doctorow article on "Wired" is hosted on wired-magazine.com
Both of these are also being nameserved and/or registered out of Njalla Okta
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
The only claim for there being a "greenwashing" emoji in Unicode 16 that's on an "authoritative" domain, is on Shepard Fairey's Obeygiant.com —
whose motto is "Manufacturing Quality Dissent Since 1989"
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
This is the page - obeygiant.com/new-greenwas...
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
In conclusion — this appears to be a spoof, a bit of social media performance art pulled off by Fairey himself, to "Manufacture Quality Dissent".
