Micah (@rincewind.run):
the reverse tech equivalent of "it's never lupus" is "it's always DNS"
even if you think it can't possibly be DNS… it's DNS
liv (@livfreeorcry.gay):
weird inexplicable shit happening between two computers? that's DNS babyyyyy
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Back when OSX was still called Mac OS [number], an entire Fortune 500 corp was brought to a standstill for 2 days because the netadmins had decided to tell the DNS system to trust any machine that used DHCP to advertise itself as the authoritative name server - which OSX did by default at that time
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
They also had configured the internal network to relay those DHCP advertisements. Everywhere. In. The. Corp.
Across four continents
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
The corporate Mac guy had merely plugged his cube in to the network
THE Bryan Wenzel (@bryanwenzel.bsky.social):
Well, see, there's your problem right there
(Have also seen a corp network taken down because some butthole with an iThing & active DHCP took over the segment DNS handling, I had to figure it out with Wireshark in real time)
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
looking back on it, it was hilarious - very unfun in the moment, and I wasn't even in the blamechain for it
THE Bryan Wenzel (@bryanwenzel.bsky.social):
I'm proud of troubleshooting it now looking back, the bonus is that it was the head of facility security that did it, & he HATED me, so it was great to throw his dumb butt under the bus directly to the CTO & COO
But at the time? That Monday morning? That SUCKED, the entire network was basically off
