A socio econ caste census was one of the electoral promises of the Oppsn, they plan to use it to justify expanding affirmative action quotas(currently capped at ~60% nationally) and there was also talk of asset redistribution.
And now it looks like the govt will do it for them, as a masterstroke supposedly. When you lift all the policies you can implement from your rival's manifesto and withdraw your own within 24 hours at the first signs of any opposition that's when you are winning politically.

Yeah there's no real contemporary data I think(thus the census) but in the 70s or whenever last one was taken it was 75-25 roughly. Its probably closer to 85-15 now considering what I can see of fertility patterns around me. Its so beyond over.

Right wing guy gets into power. Over the years the right wing guy passes policies both moderate and right wing. Every time he passes a moderate policy the right wing followers split with one major group accusing him of being a leftist in disguise. Every time he passes a right wing policy a major part of the right wing accuses him of not pushing far enough too put certain misbehaving groups of people in their place.
On top of that there is a possibility that the right wing leader once he got into power at the top began too realize that the zealous followers might be kind of r-slurred and is trying too right the ship by coming as close too passing the policies they believe in without sinking the country. However, @timmy_blueballs's man's is finding out that the only way forward might actually be too pass some of those left wing policies.
Passing those left wing policies won't make the left wing like him any more than he is liked right now. Nor would it retain the support of his right wing base.
So his choices are too pass left wing policies and fall into irrelevance or pass moderate/ right wing policies and fall into irrelevance.
Factoring in that traditionalist leaders generally hate their own people for failing them more so than hating the enemy for failing them, it is more likely that the PM would retire after passing a bunch of left wing policies just too spite his own base.
That's just @timmy_blueballs's theory on human nature though.
