Interestingly, the "tribal Africans" thing is a bit of a myth. There were actually quite a few prominent and powerful African kingdoms and empires that existed before the arrival of colonial forces. Mali and Ethiopia in particular were thriving empires during Europe's Medieval period. Mali was quite sophisticated and maintained a very large standing army, and had extensive trade and contact with the Muslim world. Ethiopia was a major Christian kingdom that traded and sent delegations to Rome and other cultural centers of Europe. And that's not even touching on the lesser-known kingdoms and civilizations that existed further south.
