Not if you wanted a somewhat unified nation. Go too far with that you either have to exterminate the population or deal with permanent insurrection and guerrilla warfare/terrorism in that area.

Nah likely just near permanent regional instability and hostility. Robberies, skirmishes, small  scale :marseyjustice: infrastructure damage. You see a bit of this already with Wild West outlaws (many were ex-confederate soldiers)

Probably a much more violent and influential version of the Klan as well.

Is not like the yankees were in love with the darkies

I think :marseyoscargamble: there'd be that too I guess :marseyshrug: but it'd be likely more of a sideshow to guerrilla campaigns done by ex-confederates.

Yankees were very much in love with the darkies at the time. Like literally in "Kingdom Coming".

The danger was this would turn into a really weird race war with blacks supported by Northern whites killing off all the Southerners. You see a taste of this in the trans-Mississippi and the western theater in 1864-1865. Like look up the dialogue between Forrest and Canby when Canby is saying "I didn't tell my black troops to stop taking prisoners, I just totally supported them when they decided to."
