Denazification was always a surface level attempt. Until the Cold War broke out which let it end by both german sides.
Almost all cheated the "denzifaction" like "I never saw/heard/knew anything". "It was a job, I had no clue where the rockets had fallen!" and so on. Yes, they died out in silence. Yeah, I know the former NSDAP members, Wehrmacht and SS officers just pretended they knew nothing and shut their mouths. I was referring to cultural shift. The German boomers were raised in the new system that looked down upon National-socialism and displayed the extent of their crimes. Present-day Germany has rightoids but actual Nazis as completely dead as a movement.
The American South glorified the confederacy for over a century, the Lost Cause myth and all that, the stuff we saw in Birth of a Nation was the kind of cope they actually believed for generations after the war.

In America the Republicans always whine about it, but whenever they're in power they mysteriously start talking about walls, like they're talking to r-slurs with a mental age of 8. (Typical Republican voters.)
They will never prosecute anyone employs illegals. Because all of their donors do this. The MAGAtards are the worst about this. "Yeah I'm actually racist and hate brown people, but don't take away the ones doing my lawn and cutting up chicken in meatpacking plants."
Which is hilarious because in 20th century America mowing your lawn was a symbol of you being a normal middle class Christian who kept up appearances. Now the "Christian" South has turned this into a way to show off that people work for you.
