There's a really good book called The Prague Cemetary (same author as all time classic The Name of the Rose) that's about a point in relatively recent history where "italy" was a bunch of tiny, largely irrelevant city-states. Similar to what happens in this wikipedia entry, although set somewhat earlier, the warring wannabe "countries" of northern italy are manipulated by proto-feds from bigger countries into making a series of decisions which turn out to be great for the winners and very, very poor for the losers. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in the weird recent history of europe.

I really :marseythinkorino2: really :marseythinkorino2: liked Foucault's pendulum it's a little :marseytroublemaker: proto-internet-schizo, I wouldn't recc name of the rose since it's a bit masturbatory but it's super :marseygoku: popular for a reason

Focuault's book about prisons, power, and punishment (whatever the title is) was a bit shit. I've never really cared for extremely vague terms and well postmodernists acting like they're anything close to a social science. But schizo ramblings? That's fair.

That book is awesome, really gripping stuff. It's actually really hard to write an evil character and keep the reader invested but Eco pulled it off bigly. Very interesting storytelling device with the diary too, loved that.
