My favorite post Austro-Hungarian collapse trivia https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitva_o_Zvolen:

Šnejdárek intended to attack the Hungarians in the direction of Levice from the north. The French general Schüler, an Alsatian, was to attack from the west. Béla Kun probably commanded the Bolsheviks. Since Šnejdárek had almost no backup, he decided on a ruse. He called one of his officers and ordered him to march towards Košice, taking with him about a hundred soldiers in linen uniforms. These soldiers had to blacken their faces and hands and tie not quite white scarves on their heads like turbans. At each railway station they had to get off, walk along the platform and speak 'Senegalese' out loud. The officer countered that he did not have a single soldier who could speak Senegalese. Snejdarek assured him that it was enough if they mumbled something unintelligible, but the word Senegal had to be intelligible. He reckoned that more than one Hungarian spy would catch on to this word and exaggerate the details a little to get a higher reward. The "Senegalese" had only made appearances in Žilina and Košice, yet in 48 hours in Pest they "knew" that Franchet d'Espèrey, commander-in-chief of the Allied army in the Balkans, had sent two regiments of Senegalese (about 6,000 soldiers) to Šnejdárk via Romania as a backup. From Pest, the disinformation then reached the front, where many Hungarian soldiers did not want to be taken prisoner for fear of man-eaters. The Senegalese were young soldiers from Vršovice in Prague.

I like all these stories about people doing strange cons by pretending to be foreigners. Back in the Middle ages you could just make some costume, walk 2 towns over, introduce yourself as Sultan Al-Troodou of India and grift all the money from the local merchants guild to go buy exotic spices for them
