I'm quite fascinated by pre-modern medicine. There was a lot of nonsense, but particularly with regards to surgery there were some remarkable successes

Yeah. They may not have been as good as we are now, but they were way better than nothing. Like in the Civil War 80% of the guys who got shot survived.
