We have very partial, but sufficient, DNA from Christopher Columbus," he said. "We have DNA from his son Fernando Colón, and in both the Y [male] chromosome and mitochondrial DNA [transmitted by the mother] of Fernando there are traces compatible with a Jewish origin

This is so vague, which Haplogroup did he belong? !biology

From El País

And it's not like there are exclusively jewish haplogroups, just haplogroups with a higher frequency among jewish populations.

Geneticist Antonio Alonso, who headed the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences until January, is blunt: "Unfortunately, from a scientific perspective, no assessment can be made after viewing the documentary, since it does not provide a single piece of information on what was analyzed. My conclusion is that the documentary Colón ADN does not show Colón's DNA at any time and scientists do not know what analyses were performed."

They were full of shit!? WOW! :#marseyunamused:

This is the most BBC journo bullshit I've ever seen.

The study of DNA contradicts the traditional theory, which many historians had questioned, that the explorer was an Italian from Genoa.

Like look at this sentence, which implies that knowing where the guy was born is a "theory".

  • Sphereserf3232 : Columbus still has living descendants to this day, including those carrying his surname

There have been an estimated 25 conflicting theories of his birthplace, including Poland, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Hungary and Scandinavia.

So I'm sure this one is right. :#marseyeyeroll:

These new findings are based on more than two decades of research.

>:marseysoylentgrin: MY NEW FINDINGS ARE BASED ON MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF RESEARCH

Columbus died in the Spanish city of Vallodalid in 1506 but wished to be buried on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. His remains were taken there in 1542 but centuries later were transferred to Cuba before being finally laid to rest in Seville.

Oh so it's likely not him.

I wonder if they ran the same test on his relatives to see how closely the body matches theirs.

But they now believe he lived in Spain - likely in Valencia - and was Jewish. They think he hid his background to avoid persecution.

Or because he didn't care much about being Jewish and would rather sail around the world. But yeah, play that violin. :marseyworldssmallestviolin:

That article is bereft of details.
