Complete r-slur in the Mexican Revolution
Wilson invaded Veracruz to help the revolutionaries, but instead united every Mexican against the US
Pancho Villa was only revolutionary who supported the invasion of Veracruz. He was the most pro-American revolutionary in general. The American public loved him due to a popular documentary made about him. Yet, Wilson didn't back Villa but rather a Mexican nationalist who hated America, Venustiano Carranza
Carranza reduced Villa's forces to a few hundred. In desperation and revenge, Villa attacked an American base to bait an invasion. America launched a "Punitive Expedition" that ran around the desert in circles with no local support. They never caught Pancho Villa. Villa used the street cred from defeating the Americans to rebuild his forces
Even worse, Wilson did not get permission from Carranza for the Punitive Expedition. Carranza was forced to fight the Americans or else lose face. The Americans fought and killed hundreds of Carrancistas, i.e. the side they were trying to help
