Imagine if he was just scratching his peepee and this is how he's immortalized forever… also did the volcanic ash flash-freeze everyone? I still don't understand how that worked, I feel like if I was going about my business and then got covered in super hot ash I would fall to the ground in agony, not hold my pose as I died

More like flash burn.

Which is why the pose they're in doesnt mean much, like regular burn victims the muscles contract when they're roasting, creating this hunched /foetal position. Theres 0 reason to believe he was actually choking his chicken.

Were they killed by the heat of the pyroclastic flow? I thought they were basically suffocated by the toxic cloud as they were buried in ash.

Afaik the heat. The ash is hundreds if not thousands of degrees celsius hot, it basically instantly incinerates everything it touches.

The ash covered them, and as their bodies decayed it basically created a mold. When people realized what was going on with the remains, someone got the idea to pour plaster into the cavities surrounding the skeletons, and we ended up with plaster casts of the people who died.

It would be like getting buried in an avalanche or mudslide

Shouldn't that crush you up into a little ball though and not leave you posed?
