You know, I wouldn't be surprised if, ten years from now, someone does some serious documentary research and discovers that the whole Stanislav Petrov false alarm incident was way more complicated than everyone thinks, or straight up didn't happen.

At the same time, I wholeheartedly believe it happened.

If that sounds like a contradiction, well, you have to strike a balance between the credulous Redditor dork and the obnoxious Bill Burrian conspiracy theorist. The duality of man.

I mean there's the plain question of whether "if you knew and believed nukes were inbound to your country and were in charge of the counterstrike would you do so"? MAD relies on the answer to that being yes but I wouldn't be surprised if for a significant portion of any population such would be viewed as nothing more than petty revenge. It's GG for you and yours anyway, blowing everything up on the other side works as part of nuclear warfare simulations but what does it actually achieve for you?

If someone's gonna kill you and your family then obv you're inclined to do """petty""" revenge.

Nukes wouldn't kill that many either, though if your family lives in capital yea they're fricked
