!historychads the real question is, how many people in the wehrmacht weren't dirty? Especially on the Eastern Front, what are the chances of a German soldier not having been involved in some form of war crime considering the nature of "vernichtungskrieg"?
The red army didn't genocide the Germans (they went ballistic on civilians and soldiers just not as much), just for that they were slightly less savage as a whole.
35% of German POWs died under the Soviets, while 60% of Soviet POWs died under the Germans.

We're talking about the average soldier not the policy of high command
Mass r*pe by Soviet soldiers first began during the Battle of Romania and during the Budapest offensive in Hungary.[9] On the territory of Nazi Germany, it began on 21 October 1944 when troops of the Red Army crossed the bridge over the Angerapp creek (marking the Germany–Poland border) and committed the Nemmersdorf massacre before they were beaten back a few hours later. The details and level of violence committed on this incident have since been disputed.
The majority of the assaults were committed in the Soviet occupation zone; estimates of the numbers of German women r*ped by Soviet soldiers have ranged up to 2 million.

By the time the 6th army surrendered they had been living on 500 calories a day of rotten grain and frozen horse meat for months because of the encirclement. I don't think the Soviet had the food and means to keep the survivors alive... but I don't think they would have even if they could.

While my gut instinct is to say the Slavs are more savage, in this case the Germans probably were worse. They were executing POWs literally right after the first combat of the war (a bunch of Polish mailmen were taken out back and shot after they resisted German takeover of the post office).

Solzhenitsyn suggests in The Gulag Archipelago Vol 2 that the Soviets in East Prussia might have been as bad as the Germans in Russia.
I tend to tend to believe him because he says it in a self-incriminating way. Which would indicate that the Germans really were that bad.
I never got roped into the Holocaust or anything, but I've had jobs where you've got to screw somebody over. They didn't tell you when you signed on, they dump that on you much later. And you just kind of go along with it because what else are you going to do? Stage a mutiny? How old are you?
So at the risk of ruining everyone's parade with a nonanswer: I think the krauts probably had variable levels of culpability. There were guys like Heydrich and Hitler who were 100% guilty. There were guys mostly guilty, and so on.
I think think the worst ones mostly killed themselves to avoid punishment.
You have to be a genuine brainlet to take anything that fraud wrote at face value. The Gulag Archipelago especially is nothing more than badly written, butthurt borgeouis tales of fiction. To think that people still refer to that guy as a historical authority, or even among the best Russian writers like I've seen in the past , even though he was known for being a compulsive liar but also an antisemitic, steaming pile of fascist shit fills me with existential dread.
Solzhenitsyn was a compulsive liar though lol. Dude was eternally butthurt at commies for ruining his bougie life and doing away with the Tsar so he dedicated his life to come up with the most brazen lies and fake stories to try and discredit the Soviet Union and Communism. If he were alive today he'd be one of those /pol/ schizos that spends hours on end complaining about Jewish subversion, how the West has fallen, why they can't get laid and how to be a trad Christian.
So yeah, if you wanna take hearsay and personal anecdotes as history and facts then be my guest. I wouldn't expect any more or less from a rightoid.

Average soldier?
Western front no more than what others did at the time if it didn't involve Jews.
On the eastern front they were probably less savage than the Russians in some regards
