Peronist masses, including many young people, had gathered there to acclaim Juan Perón's definitive return from an 18-year exile in Spain. The police estimated three and a half million people had gathered at the airport. In his plane, Perón was accompanied by president Héctor Cámpora, a representative of Peronism's left wing, who had come to power on May 25, 1973, amid popular euphoria and a period of political turmoil. Cámpora was opposed to the Peronist right wing, declaring during his first speech that "the spilled blood will not be negotiated".[2]
From PerĂłn's platform, camouflaged snipers from the right-wing of Peronism opened fire on the crowd. The left-wing Peronist Youth and the Montoneros were targeted and trapped. At least 13 bodies were subsequently identified, and 365 were injured during the massacre.[3]
Lmao
The Ezeiza massacre marked the end of the alliance of left and right-wing Peronists which Perón had managed to form. Héctor Cámpora represented the main figure of the left-wing and José López Rega, a former federal police officer and Perón's personal secretary who had accompanied Perón during his exile in Francoist Spain, was the right-wing's representative. López Rega would also be the founder of the Alianza Anticomunista Argentina right-wing death squad.
A populist and a nationalist, PerĂłn was popular from the far-left to the far-right, but this conjunction of forces ended that day. During his exile, PerĂłn himself had supported both young left-wing Peronists, whose icons included Che Guevara, the Montoneros, Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias (FAR), Fuerzas Armadas Peronistas (FAP), the Peronist Youth (JP) and right-wing Peronists composed "Special Formations", gathering radicals such as the Iron Guard (GH) or the Movimiento Nacionalista Tacuara.
!neolibs !anticommunists behold the schizophrenic nature of Peronismo
On his wife's presidency
Another source of contention between her and the voters was the increasing impression that José López Rega, the Minister of Social Welfare, set the agenda for a broad swath of Perón's policies, vetting nearly all domestic and foreign policy. His public behaviour – which included bizarre actions such as silently mouthing her words as she spoke – began to cost the president much-needed support among the Argentine public.[21] Known to have fascist sympathies, López Rega was also notably corrupt and used his position to secure business partnerships with (ODESSA network principal) Otto Skorzeny, (Libyan leader) Muammar Gaddafi, and (the Italian Fascist) Licio Gelli (to whose P-2 lodge López Rega belonged).
Over 700 people died from political violence during Mrs. PerĂłn's first 15 months in office, of which more than half were subversives and most of the remainder were security forces; by March 1976, civilians comprised fully half of the 1,358 deaths attributable to this conflict

It keeps up a brisk pace and doesn't keep repeating itself so like many documentaries.
It's remarkably thorough, covering politics, diplomacy, economics, culture, and war. And it actually mentions stuff that's really important but usually left out of pop history. Like what countries are borrowing money and from who. If I could nitpick, it's too focused on Europe & America, but given the level of detail it goes into, it would have taken like 30 hours to cover the whole world.
It's a tragic period where people ruined everything in every way by being r-slurs. There's a story passed down in my family about a kid who was growing up at this time who legit thought that we had finished the "war to end all wars" and was really disappointed to find out how naive she was. (I get the impression that she actually personally had a lot of fun serving in WW2 tho, traveling the world.)

In 1869 there lived a disenfranchised slave owner who had his rightful property stolen by the government. His name was Jebediah Hallow.
To pass the lonely winter nights, he invented the first Fleshlight by hollowing out a pumpkin, warming the interior with a candle, and carving a hole in the side to frick. He called it his Jack-Hole-Lantern.
As he fell further into poverty and hunger, he hatched a plan to obtain food.
On October 31st at dusk, he stripped naked with only his Jack-Hole-Lantern covering his peepee.
He went door-to-door demanding food scraps or else he would expose his peepee to everyone inside the house.
"Peepee or Treat!" he would demand. Those who were too confused or slow to comply, he would whip out his peepee to the entire household.
"Oh my, I've had to bear the sight of that Old Hallow Ween!" everyone would say.
Jebediah Hallow was able to accumulate enough food to last the entire winter. To confuse his neighbors further he would wear different costumes to disguise himself.
The night eventually became known as Old Hallow Ween night.

The North Vietnamese did something similar to the 101st just before my dad got there. They ambushed a bunch of guys and they took cover in a crater. They had already rigged up a 155mm shell there. They planned out the whole thing.
Reminds me of a line from an old Israeli movie. "They're not stupid, you know."

My dad was in a real war at this time.
Told us exactly how this works. The "paratroopers" "came under fire". It's a bad unit.
The Parachute Regiment are all massive cute twinks.
The 101st (or 82nd) never did this.

My people (several of them) went into it about the same time on the other side of the country. Nobody complained about the regiment covering them.
Frick racism. If you even think about it you're not American.

Islam's reliance on Jihad is an effective way to fuel conquests, since in its ideology every human on earth should either convert, pay up or die, but the problem is this tactic of zerg-rushing relies on having a very strong figurehead that can lead the conquest and rally people around it, some sort of Attila or Alexander the Great. What you quickly see happen with Islam is that they take up a lot of lands very quickly, then their leader dies, and then basically every either collapses or slows down to a crawl because the power vaccuum created ends up causing a civil war, or the hastily conquered regions (that weren't colonised yet) start yearning for independence, or the ONE thing that's supposed to keep your people united (religion, through the ummah) suffers a schism and everything goes to shit.
People think taking over a country is a big thing, but while decapitating its elite and putting yourself in their place is an impressive achievement on the surface, it means jackshit if you can't control the people, which was often what happened with the Arabs, who just formed a ruling elite that wanted little to do with the local population. Successful empires generally solve this issue either by military occupation (though this ceases to be effective once the soldiers aren't there, look at the USA in the Middle East for proof of that), by trying to insert themselves in the local culture to gain legitimacy (like the Franks in Gaul, who essentially claimed the title of consul or imperator in order to appear more legitimate to the local Gallo-Roman population) or by straight up replacing the locals through colonisation. The Arabs tried to bypass this by colonising the people using religion to replace their local culture, but the numerous schisms in Islam hindered it a lot.
They also got extremely lucky, with the Persians suffering from a hundred years of wars with the Romans, the Byzantines being taken up on multiple fronts, the Goths having a succession crisis and their lands being in general unusually productive during the time of their rise.
And with the Abbasid Revolution in the 740's, despite Islam uniting the conquered populations, everything splits apart and the empire ceases to grow, though they did grow culturally thanks to their absorption of Roman remnants in the Middle East and their conquest of Persia (both which also coincidentally formed the gateway between Europe and Asia), which guaranteed them a solid cultural base which while not originally theirs was slowly but surely assimilated into Islamic culture. That's the one big advantage with identifying with religion instead of ethnicity, it allows you to bypass race and culture and keep up the appearance of a strong and united group.
They technically managed a renaissance with the arrival of the Ottoman Turks, who took none of that bullshit and managed to keep a central authority (on top of having a much more stable empire that they built from years of steady conquests instead of zerg-rushing like iditios), but even then, as soon as that empire stopped growing, Islam just hindered them from progressing further culturally. Interesting to note is that imo the "Islamic" civilisation and the "Ottoman" civilisation are quite different ; while they share the same religion, which makes them appear similar, the latter was Turkic in character and actually a lot more Western-influenced thanks to the taking of Constantinople. In general it's quite funny because most parts of the Islamic civilisation are not Arab at all, but rather a mix of Persian, Byzantine and Turkish/Ottoman.
From the day the 19th century arrived the Ottomans and Islamic civilisation in general was already cooked ; they lost wars by the dozens thanks to their ultraconservatism and their lack of forward-thinking. Islam's a neat religion for expansionism but it doesn't really drive people to innovation or change, and its philosophy leads to stagnation without outside stimulation. Turkey itself only really got off the ground again when Ataturk brought secularism to it, though the sheer technical r-sluration of the Empire means even the unity of religion couldn't save it.
PS : i remember a particularily funny incident where Ottoman officers visited Ludwig Loewe (German manufacturer) to look into possibly buying machine guns for the Ottoman Army. The guy at the factory noted that they seemed to not give a single actual frick about their task. Here's an excerpt from an old article on the subject :
According to the correspondence, it seems obvious that Luger professionally supported and advised the Montenegrins. On July 10, 1907 he wrote to Haydukovich: "I am bound by my word to support and defend your interests and behave as being one of you." He gave detailed data about other countries' armaments asking for conspiracy of confidentiality in that regard. On December 30, 1906, he informed Haydukovich that, "Turkish Government had commissioned 50 machine guns." In the letters of May 19 and July 10, 1907 he reports that the work on finishing the Turkish machine guns were being accelerated. That weapon was 7.65mm calibre and "adopted to fit the wheeled version of sled mount M1901 that could be pulled on the wheels or carried on horseback. The mount mass was 67 kg and machine gun and carriage mass was almost 100 kg (sic), which means that the weapon was too heavy for the hilly terrains." Luger did not hesitate to mention that the "two Turkish officers responsible for receiving material were completely ignorant as to the machine guns and, in addition, they showed no interest in learning anything, but were only embarrassed because smoking in the factory was forbidden.
Really speaks as to how far behind Islamic civilisation was in the end, when the top brass of its army couldn't even be bothered when it came to the biggest military revolution of the time. Even the bloody Montenegrins were more professional.

[This started as a reply to this but got out of hand: https://rdrama.net/post/306631/marseysailor-marseyclapping2let-marseyclapping2-womenmarseyclapping2-sink-marseyclapping2/7138627#context Also this is a specific disagreement I have with Parshall very specifically about the intentions of Fuchida, I 100% believe him about everything else, including Fuchida being wrong about the sequence of events at Midway.]
Imagine you're doing a bombing run and the jet engine catches fire because they [the Chinese] cheaped out on the fuel and used gutter oil instead.
They would do that.
There's a rumor that at the Battle of the Yalu River against the japs in 1894 their shells were filled with sand because corrupt officials had stolen the money for explosives. (This is likely one reason for the recent tard rumor that Chinese ICBMs are actually filled with water so nuclear war will be fun.)
On that note, Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the aerial part of the attack on Pearl Harbor among other things, related some things after WW2 that made a lot more sense in hindsight. One was that the old guys who'd fought in this war and the one with Russia kept trying to tell the kids that they were not like what you saw in the media. Japanese propaganda (and western pop historians) put out this bullshit that these were really easy fights where the Japanese with their superior intelligence and bushido spirit trounced their opponents without breaking a sweat. The old-timers tried to explain that no, these were tough fights against smart, determined enemies. The wars could have ended up going the other way if a few shells landed a few meters in another direction. And they were scared out of their fricking minds the whole time. But Fuchida's generation didn't want to listen to old boomers warning them that war might actually be bad.
He's a fascinating guy. After the war he was converted to Christianity by, among other things, missionary work by a guy who had been on the Doolittle Raid and got captured and tortured by them. And chose to return to Japan as a missionary. As a guy who legit believed in bushido, Fuchida had to hear out his fellow warrior. !christians
There's been a lot of shit flung at him in the last couple decades. Insinuations that he lied about stuff, that he was part of some huge conspiracy by a certain faction of the Japanese Navy to make Nagumo the scapegoat for Midway. Personally, I don't buy it. He gives us a bunch of caveats himself if you actually read the book. He was writing entirely from memory about events that happened several years earlier while he had a high fever. And then the whole fricking ship exploded and he was seriously wounded, breaking his ankles. Foot pain can confuse you.
So when certain, I'm not gonna say the word because I'm trying to lay off it, when certain individuals like Parshall make up all this schizo shit, I can't take him seriously as a historian. He makes a lot of claims that just throw up huge red flags that I'm being told bullshit. Most importantly, making claims that nobody could possibly know. He claims he knows what was going on in Fuchida's mind. I don't know that he ever even talked to the guy. Then he makes claims about Fuchida being in this conspiracy with a bunch of old Japanese Navy dudes to write his book in a very specific three-dimensional chess way as part of their scheme. And Parshall somehow can understand all of it.
Neighbor pls.
You're not Japanese. You will never be Japanese. This isn't like most countries where if you have a positive attitude you're accepted in a couple hours. You will never be Japanese. It's one of those countries where you can live with these people for years and you're never let in. They will never tell you what's really going. This part is obvious. The next part is a little more subtle and a little more darning:
You're not in that generation. How in the frick can you also read the minds of all these older navy officers running the conspiracy? Spock couldn't mind-meld with these guys fast enough to figure it out, but somehow you know? How do you somehow have this special insight into the minds of people from my great-grandparents' generation? No Japanese people alive in the world today know how the frick these peoples' minds worked. But you brazenly declare that you know all about it?
Parshall is a HACK FRAUD.

This was the first wartime deployment of a mixed male-female crew on a U.S. Navy combat vessel with just over one-third of her crew being women. During this time, the ship was branded as the "love boat" when 36 of the crew's women (about 10%) discovered that they were pregnant.
