In 2021 Belgium registered nearly 2,700 assisted suicides, with 24 involving psychiatric illnesses as the primary diagnosis—down from 45 in 2014. In the Netherlands, euthanasia among psychiatric patients appears to be rising, albeit from a low base: there were 115 cases in 2021, up from one in 2003. The most common psychiatric diagnosis for assisted deaths in both countries was a mood disorder, such as bipolar disorder (see charts 3 and 4).

But data are worryingly patchy, and not directly comparable. In Belgium, for example, only one diagnosis is recorded per case, even if patients suffer from multiple conditions.
