I missed the craze when it was a network show, but too many people I know were invested in this show.
I am currently watching the pilot and have already loudly laughed twice at how bad it is.
Also I fricking hate every piece of media that JJ Abrams has ever even considered working on

I think it's one of the first big instances of a mystery box collapsing in on itself.
A twitter quote from TVTropes mentions this phenomena with a later example (Game of Thrones)

High quality reply. Whether or not you like Breaking Bad I always cite that Vince Gilligan came to the network with the story pitch and told them on day 1 that there would be 5 seasons, and only 5 seasons. The story has a defined narrative arc.
It's a symptom of the move from episodic to over-arching narrative television, IMO.
Love em or hate em, Seinfeld and Friends didn't really have to ever worry about explaining what happened in the prior episode.

"GHOSTS could be here" he thought, "I've never been in this neighborhood before. There could be SKELETONS anywhere." The cool wind felt good against his bare chest. "I HATE GOBLINS" he thought. Sweet Dreams are Made of These reverberated his entire car, making it pulsate even as the $9 wine circulated through his powerful thick veins and washed away his (merited) fear of SPOOKS after dark. "With a car, you can go anywhere you want" he said to himself, out loud.

It's enjoyable escapism but it gets really repetitive. Every episode is like "flashback to a character's past, now some random crazy shit happens on the island, another flashback, now here's some more crazy shit that doesn't ever get explained".
The characters also behave in unrealistic ways. Even in the first episode dozens of the survivors hear weird monster noises and crashing trees coming from the forest at night, but then they just go back to their trivial interpersonal dramas instead of acting like there's a fricking monster on the island.
A character gets tortured by another one and then they're fine working together in like the next episode.
The creepy fanatical bald guy invites a dude to go look for some shit with him, then drugs him with psychedelics without his consent, and the dude is just like ah whatever, I'll keep exploring the island alone with you... instead of just running away or fighting.
It's real slop.

It was enjoyable from a kind of overhead view, but episode to episode could be brutal. So many time wasters. So many. Like, half the runtime could've been put in the dumpster and the show would've been better off. But it also had some absolutely nutso plotlines for TV. Besides just endless theorizing on what was going on, the amount of rabbit holes you could go down just reading about the various concepts the show played with was really fun.
