I'm guessing a lot of it is somebody runs into a some crisis in their life where they're out of options and joining a cult is the least stupid thing they could do. At the worst point in my life I was consciously thinking sometimes "maybe I should join a cult until my financial situation improves". But I fricked it all up. This cute asian girl (I mean she was 5 by asian standards but an 8 by Portland standards) approaches me at the bus stop and tries to get me to join Sokka Gakkai. If she had really had her heart set on converting me, she could have.
(Don't have to pay rent, if I get hurt there's always someone around to help me, have an excuse to talk to her again...)
But I couldn't help but laugh at her bullshit. Telling me that she needed a new car and that she repeated this mantra over and over an then she got a car.
So then it was really awkward as we still had to wait for the bus.
If they had thrown at me somebody charismatic who knew how to manipulate me, at that point in my life they could have gotten me. I'd be consciously thinking "this is some r-slurred cult, I'm going to exploit them for resources and then leave". But the next thing I know, I'd have Keith Raniere's symbol branded onto my peepee.
