>That's factoring into whether or not I support this. The union adds cost to the final product. The union helps us reduce consumption.

They talk about supporting poor people but then implement policy that makes it that only the rich can do anything fun. :marseyraging:

Regressive taxes are amazing as long as they're to force poors to act how you want. They also let you complain that rich people aren't taxed enough. They're really a win win.

These poor men and women are in store for a brutal reality check when alcohol sales are fully privatized and their $40/hour job of stocking shelves, and cashing people out at a snails space are gone, and all of a sudden they're jobless, have no skills, and are unemployable.

LOL. No. I wish this was true, but no.

You clearly don't understand how Leaf public unions work. Actually sticking it too the union here would result in increasing the public's choice and civil liberties. No Canadian government could stand that, so they will cave eventually. The only difference between the conservative and liberal governments is how long they'll pretend to put up a fight first.

Everyone could use a little less alcohol.

Serious question though, why are LCBO employees entitled to a $30/hr job when the international student at Loblaws can do the exact same job requiring the exact same skill for minimum wage?

https://old.reddit.com/r/toronto/comments/1dxlxc1/view_from_the_lcbo_strike_at_baybloor/lc30fqp/?context=8

I don't think an international student working at Loblaws have the same knowledge of LCBO staff. I bet they wouldn't even be able to tell you the difference of red to white wine

I have never once even considered asking a LCBO staffer anything but where X is.

Because we should fight a wage race to the bottom.

I love how ever labour cartel (I mean union member) uses this to justify their grossly inflated wages.

It's called a living wage.

No that's the new hire wage of 16.45. 30 an hour is more than I make doing back breaking farm work in the heat and it's insane a cashy in a nice AC'd building makes anywhere near that.

They better be careful cuz a bunch international students are about to offer themselves for those positions at half the salary lol

This is why we have Unions and a minimum wage in Ontario.

And why both should be done away with.

:#marseypraying:

Instead of bringing other people down, think of the money that would go to the province's coffers to pay for services we need, and that will end up instead in the hands of the private sector. I fully support the workers and I condemn the constant efforts of the Ford government to degrade and privatize public services.

The government pisses away every dollar they've ever been given, to the point they need to take out massive loans. They need less money coming in to force them to spend it more wisely.

Why should an employees union dictate the terms as to how liquor is sold in the province?

Do you also endorse letting the police unions dictate the terms as to how law is enforced in the province?

We have elected representatives who are specifically given the power to set policy on things like law enforcement and alcohol sales. And we all have a chance to vote for who they are.

Comparing those two unions is a false equivalency, find a better example my guy.

"It's different when we do it! We're the good guys!!!!"

Why is it a false equivalency? The union that represents who sells alcohol wants to negotiate the terms on which alcohol is sold in the province, and has gone on strike, cutting off sales of alcohol to everyone until they get there way.

How are police unions not comparable? Other than there's a predictable type on reddit who think police unions are bad, and all other government unions are inherently forces good, and this particular example calls out the general double standard?

What if we went with hydro worker unions deciding we needed to have more coal power plants operating in Ontario, and going on strike until the provincial government met their demands? Is that comparable?

Police unions don't strike because they get their demands met when they speak to the Gov't. LCBO is in danger of being dissolved and replaced by private companies. Loblaws isn't threatening to patrol the streets in NoName gear by September.

They didn't used to. Member the Montreal police strike? Wasn't 20 hours before the armed forces had to be called in to restore order.

My point is police are important, unlike overpaid stock boys

That's not really explaining why it's a false equivalency.

You might think government control of all retail liquor sales is fine or a good thing. That's a public policy position, and you are totally in the right to have your opinion. But OPSEU isn't the government, and with this strike, they're flexing that they actually (want to) control how liquor gets sold in the government... and what a coincidence, their preferred model entirely to the benefit of their union members.

It's wrong for public sector unions to determine public policy. We have elected representatives who are supposed to do that: everyone has a right to vote for, or run for the position of an elected representative.

Otherwise it's like letting the very wealthy decide how much they'll pay in taxes.

So in your world, the Unions should just take whatever the government says lying down because they were elected?

No they shouldn't exist at all. Public sector unions are nothing but rent seeking blights on the tax payer.

Go to Alberta. They have private liquor stores. They have 1/72nd the selection and everything is more expensive than in Ontario. You are simply wrong if you think privatization will improve anything except foreign beer companies bottom lines.

Kay, you realize that's a rural province with a low population right? This is Onterrible.

Also with the death of "socially responsible pricing" costs will drop. They sure as shit can't go up.

And frick this "selection" bullshit. The best LBCO in the province has less choice than the average new york liquor store.

1. Nobody is making $40/hr stocking shelves at LCBO.

They make 30.

2. What makes these unionized workers unskilled, but the min wage workers at Loblaws skilled? What are you implying cannot transfer into another market?

Nothing, both are unskilled.

3. You're in store for a brutal reality check if the workers lose this fight and Daddy Galen Weston starts selling ColdShots for $15 a pack.

I don't know who or what that is, but it sounds cheaper than I'd pay at the LCBO

4. Unionize your workplace.

Never.

There's no phrase I hate more than "living wage". As if the wages are just a throttle you can artificially push up/down to fundamentally define people's cost of living.

If you want a "living wage" stop making houses/food/healthcare/cars/fuel/etc cost so much. Which likely means the opposite of a policy that drives up prices for regular people and generates fewer small businesses/jobs. And the opposite of propping up a monopoly.

Here to remind people that the LCBO is the reason tiny little podunk Ontario towns outside the GTA have liquor and beer at the same price we do. The government would need to increase the taxes to make up the lost revenue if they dissolve the LCBO. And even if the Cons don't do that, the increased complexity in shipping and logistics will make liquor more expensive anyway.

And lastly inhale THE LCBO UNION DOESNT DICTATE THE TAXES ON LIQUOR, THE GOVERNMENT DOES

https://old.reddit.com/r/toronto/comments/1dxlxc1/view_from_the_lcbo_strike_at_baybloor/lc2q9vn/?context=8

The lcbo has a 70% markup.

I know, and I don't care. I'm all for ending the LCBO. I do not want the government involved with liquor or any other drug. It's not their place. It's not 1930 anymore.

Based

I don't imagine most folks have issue with alcohol duties / taxes - especially since it goes back to public funding. I think their issue is with an inherently inefficient public body doing what a private competition-driven body could do more efficiently. Keep duties / taxes what they are but replace a $25 cashier / stocker with market rate

Frick your taxes

Frick market rate, people should make a proper living. The minimum wage should be over 30 dollars an hour in this province with the current cost of living

KEEP YOURSELF SAFE flatlander

So, nobody is drinking in Toronto? It won't last.

Nobody's drinking until the demands are met.

LMFAO people are already bring back truck loads from Quebec to resell

Ok, with all due respect, I couldn't give less of a frick about the podunk towns. In fact they should be paying the additional cost to ship to them, why are we subsidizing them? We subsidize pretty much every element of their lives and they hate us. I'm fine with them finally realizing how much of their lives is paid for by more urban dwellers of Ontario.

Pretty certain that the goods these podunk towns produce are more essential for human life than whatever is going on in the GTA. Downtown Toronto isn't exactly the best place to produce food.
