I asked because spyshit doesn't really strike me as having the same sort of soulless nature as marvel. with marvel, you have a market of people that will buy your product simply because they recognize a character, and don't really care about quality, just that they saw <character>. meanwhile, with mission impossible and shit, nobody really cares about the main character, people just like them because they are fun movies.
when we move away from criticism of art on objective grounds and towards ideological grounds (ie, asceticism and anti-capitalism) we lose all of the relevance that made the critique relevant in the first place. for instance, if we think that superhero movies are bad because they are about superheroes, we lose all of the relevance that we had when we realized that most of them are unironically bad and unoriginal pieces of film.
when I think of the word "soy", i think of complete conformity and deference to some product or idea, regardless of it's quality. if you expand it past that definition, it ceases to be a good critique of society and ironically becomes the very thing it was originally critiquing.
I think your definition might be broader than mine. Is listening to mediocre Christian music because at least it's not that Satanic crap "soy"? Is an exhibition of poor quality anti-colonial paintings by indigenous artists "soy"? These would seem like a departure from the original meme.
I think you might be onto something about recognition, but I'd say the original idea the recognition points to must itself be meaningless. It can't be "look there's Jesus!" or "See, capitalism is evil!" It has to be more like "X Wings! TIE fighters!"
it's necessarily less broad -- after all, it doesn't matter if you listen to mediocre Christian music or if you listen to satanic metal, all of it is made by the same people: Universal Music Group . I'm mostly being facetious but the point is that pretty much everything in our society has been meddled with by captalism and big corporations, which is probably why christian music is so mediocre - they have a niche audience that will never, ever leave. (that being said, there are innovators here and there)
but I think you are right that my definition is too vague. with most things like this (ie internet memes) it's probably best not to use it as any sort of specific guide but rather as a reflection that some things are both incredibly pervasive and downright strange.
Probably the origin of the entire concept was RLM's The Nerd Crew. Again they did this before the word "soyboy" entered the meme lexicon, and created the entire idea of "consuming product". They had no idea that this video would go on to define far-right discourse for years after hahaha

"Soy" evokes a fake scientifically constructed food product that exists as an alternative to meat, dairy, and other messier natural things.
So Marvel and other bland franchises are soy by analogy because they are soulless corporate amalgamations of assorted art-like ingredients.
On the other hand, neocon slop like Clancy isn't really soy. It's more like a triple bacon artery-clogging burger
