1849, shortly after the Mexican-American war, is partially based on true events. Back in those days Northern Mexican governors hired american gangs (mostly made up of war veterans) to kill indians as they tended to attack Mexican villages, the Mexican authorities required them to show the indian scalps as proof of the job being done and the americans were payed by the scalp. In the book the Glanton gang get's greedy and starts murdering Mexican civilians to sell their scalps as well, super gory book.
