Be a miracle of God

Start teaching yourself French without anyone forcing you to.

The creature does kill multiple people, though. I don't get why people say "Frankenstein was the real monster", the novel is more nuanced than that.

Frankenstein did nothing wrong :scoot: (The creature is based for total mayo death tho :marseyextinction: )

I actually totally agree with you but tbh I don't think the main point of the book was even "who is the real monster?"

It's more of a way for humans to conceptualize the kind of relationship a creator or god would have us. Edit: There are many Paradise Lost references lol so this theme is obvious ofc

The creature also represents the natural order being corrupted and twisted and is in some ways more of a karmic force of nature retaliating against Victor's sins. But ultimately the main theme is about ambition and the pursuit of knowledge overriding happiness/morality. Victor even says to the sailor, and I think this sentence encapsulates the main theme:

"Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow."

Anyway I :marseyheart: this book

The classic middle management belief system.

Agreed, it's just something I see on Reddit every time this book comes up, usually along the lines of "Childhood is thinking the Creature was a monster, adulthood is knowing Frankenstein was the REAL monster" and I always wonder if they've even read the book. Agreed with your take, plus themes of hubris, jealousy, corruption, isolation, redemption. It just never asks you to think of which one is the monster at all, lol.

The monster is literally incel, to the t. Every thing it says is incel shit, and he hits on most of the shit real incels say. I read it when it was a hot culture war topic and was surprised at how well it fit (and at how nobody else noticed apparently).

You should make a post on here talking about that. I'd be curious to see your thoughts. Just tag me once you post it

That would require rereading the book, which I don't want to do!

Maybe we can find someone who has not read it yet, and ask to read with that angle in mind, and report their findings.

It feels like somewhere in the 2010's the saying "humans were the monsters all along" established itself and is still going strong in many internet circles.

Seems to be pretty much the main takeaway people have from most modern zombie stories.

I hate that so much :marseyeyeroll:. I like seeing human social relations deteriorate under high pressure situations. That's what makes movies like The Thing so interesting, not the Thing itself but how the humans deal with it and turn on each other. But that's just how humans behave under very specific circumstances.

It's like saying "Oh Tillikum killed people while constantly under stress? Orcas were the real monsters all along. :marseyclueless: "

It can be a good theme but it's reductive and overused tbh

Hamas killed multiple people, they're still based for resisting colonizers tho. The demon kills people, but only in order to force victor to build him a wife so he can breed :marseychud: Victor's just a human chauvenist who won't allow a new age of creatures to be born.
