!macacos pros que gostam de história viking tem uma tradução boa disponível, o livro é muito interessante.
First chapters talk a lot about the viking religion, their society and how it was molded after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the climate events of the 530s (likely a series of volcanic eruptions resulting in the death of half of Scandinavians). The author is an archeologist so it's very focused on physical evidence more than the written sources to paint a general picture of the viking age.

Interesting book this looks!
Environmental factors are drivers of history, climate change in the 6th century hammered the Roman Empire quite hard; the crisis of the 17th century in Europe and East Asia can also be traced to the early modern cold age

I finally finished In The Shadow of the Sword about Islam by Tom Holland. I liked it, but he spent way too long discussing Christianity and Judaism instead of Islam. I understand why he did, but I would have preferred more time spent on the actual topic of the book.
Now reading Three Sips of Gin: Dominating the Battlespace with Rhodesias Elite Seluous Scouts. It's an autobiography about a guys whole life, not just the bush was. I'm not very far in but I like it so far. His parents were terribly irresponsible.
The Jewish history part ended up being my favorite. Hadn't even realized how ignorant I was about secular Jewish history during that time period until I read that book
neolib generally means classical lib and reagan would be an example of that, idk what neocon means but im pretty sure both words started as insults and any meaning theyve taken is post hoc
The Two Towers, probably going to be reading it for a while. I remember being bored and slogging through the ent moot as a kid but it didn't feel that way at all this time
The scope of the books is incredible. Geography, history, politics, folklore. Poetry in at least 2 languages. I get the feeling he composed some of the poems before writing the stories around them.
Tolkien was legitimately a genius. The only things not described in minute detail are the constellations
I've never read harry potter so it won't be a 1:1 comparison. It's a story driven novel and most of the exposition is for setting up the immediate surroundings, which imo pays off in droves. It's a slow read but I haven't once felt bored. Would definitely recommend, but take your time with it. I read a chapter a day and just enjoy his writing, usually I blow through a book in 2 to 3 days.
After finishing Kawabata's Snow Country I saw there are other of his books in a library so I'm ¾ done with Thousand Cranes. It's very similar in style, a bit more expansive in narrative and I find the prose even more beautiful. But after reading two books that revolve around love I'm going to pick something different next week. Probably some of this dood's œuvre:
Started reading fellowship of the ring for the first time
I was getting preemptively annoyed because I thought the hobbits were gonna do the same r-slurred shit from the movies, but their portrayal in the book is way better
I just finished that one, it's really good. I really like how it gets progressively less and less like The Hobbit the further they venture from the shire.
Srsly wondering, do people mostly by physical comics these days, or is mostly on EReaders? I would assume they would be way cheaper without all that color printing

I just finished The Last Duel, a book they made a flop movie about during covid.
I was less interested in the mystery of whether the r*pe happened, and more interested in its explanation of late medival politics and legal systems. It ended up being a very interesting read.

It was interesting, but I feel only tangentially relevant to the real topic of the book.
I also had taken a class called simply "History of the Jews" in college so I had a good background on it already. Class was boring as frick though.

It was a survey class so it covered a huge time frame. Hit the major beats from Jewish foundational myth up to the founding of Israel.
It was taught by a pretty Orthodoxy Jew and was dry as frick

How does it compare to, for example, Harry Potter?
HP moves at a decent pace, it's not heavyhanded on the descriptions and whatnot.
Is LOTR worth reading for someone who's more interested in the story rather than worldbuilding?
I've already seen the movies tho but still.
