First chapters talk a lot about the viking religion, their society and how it was molded after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the climate events of the 530s (likely a series of volcanic eruptions resulting in the death of half of Scandinavians). The author is an archeologist so it's very focused on physical evidence more than the written sources to paint a general picture of the viking age.
