I know asoiaf is not high lit but still, I've always been optimistic about it being almost done

I've been over this for years. Don't care, too late, too slow, and too fat.

He said he had 1200 manuscript pages a year ago and that he was 3/4 done.

I am going to optimistically assume his editor cut over 100 pages and this is draft #2 and he isn't just a fat lazy b-word

That gives me hope that the book will be good. It's a bad sign when an author become immune from his editors (stephen king)

You don't need Stephen King as an example. Some ASOIAF fan found manuscript copies of Feast and Dance that were full of notes where Martin overruled his editor. Thats how you ended up with two plodding, go nowhere narratives that were full of lines like 'fat pink mast' and an ode to diarrhea.

He goes back and edits a lot for narrative sake and clarity, a process largely due to his experience as a screenwriter for tv, which is a good thing

I don't buy it. That cope gets thrown around a ton by the ASOIAF fans on reddit, but the source for that claim was one of their powerusers guessing why Winds was so delayed (and that post was around 2015!). It eventually became a 'fact' only due to so many people citing that as the reason.
Personally, I think he's just a lazy bastard that no longer cares now that he's famous.

The first 3 were released like 2 years apart from each other and they were absolutely better than the other 2 which just felt like one book that was split and released over 10 years late.
Jump in the discussion.

Worse. It was one book that was stripped of its conclusion and then split into two. In terms of a complete narrative, he hasn't released a full book since Swords.

So the ending, the most difficult part, isn't finished. Got it.

I expect that half the book will be just the three sieges that were supposed to be the grand finale of book 5, but were moved to tWoW because book 5 was already too long. It's why I'm so surprised that it took him over 10 years to come up with 1000 pages. Half of this stuff should have been already written. About 10% of the book was already publicly released.

This shit is not releasing while the fat man lives. It will be fastened together with additional writing by a friend after his heart finally fails.

How many is he supposed to write AFTER this one comes out?
If its more than one why bother, he more than likely will die before he gets another book out why get invested in a story with no ending

I don't know if I have it in me to reread those thick frickers again. It's been over 10yrs since I've read any of them. I'd probably have to have the story more fresh in my mind to appreciate the new one anyway.

I'm actually looking forward to rereading them. I love his writing style. It's the literary version of an 80's action movie.

Maybe I could... I'm not a smart man and they were pretty easy reads.

they are easy reads! he basically just does a montage over any part that would take a long time or be complicated! Then skips to the good action parts and proceeds to kill anyone you have grown attached to. It's a really good formula, surprisingly. I just would have thought it would have been easier to write. Seriously, just put all the characters names on a dart board and throw a dart to kill someone off every time you get stuck.

Tolkien wrote books about the sublime light of God and hope that made millions of atheists interested in Catholic belief. Tolkien was a combat war veteran of the Somme, and an expert on mythology and language.
GRRM wrote books about Aragorn's Tax Policy.
Found where Redditroids discuss that post and go all “let me enjoy my goyslopppppp”

Maybe he will kill Bran in the first few pages. To make it clear that the book ending will be different from the TV one

Why would it be different? Dynaeris is an evil psycho and needed to be killed. All of the signs were there.

You are correct that the way the books are written points to the same ending as the TV show (TV show ending makes a ton of sense, they just rushed the whole thing and it came out awful).
I'm saying that maybe he upends the whole thing.
People already know how the TV show ends. So it kinda makes business sense for george to sell something completely different.

At this point I'd have to re read dance of dragons and probably go back a little further to remember what is going on.

From what i remember the opening and closing of Dance are plot threads that were ignored in the shitty show and also felt actually interesting when I read the book 100 years ago.

The epilogue of dance owns. Quentin plot doesn't make a whole lot of relevance sense tho and I personally think Victorian and euron are boring. Young griff plot however could be v based

Preach. I almost understand why he can't just sack up and finish the next book: that epilogue is now the minimum bar of quality that he has to meet or exceed for each major plot point for the next two books.
I'd forgive him for being afraid of the corner he's written himself into if he wasn't such a gigantic fat person. It's sad.

Do yourself a favor and read the “boiled leather” combined order of feast and dance. It makes for a more chronological narrative

I hate every single aspect of his personality.
And it's not because i'm butthurt; I've never read the books. I just don't like him.
Other than outright criminals and murderers, I can't think of anyone in the world I dislike more than GRRM.

No, you're absolutely right. I have read the series and find Martin to be a peepee. I read them in 2015 or so, so 4 years after the last book came out and I found the last two books to be mediocre at best. So I wasn't invested as his fans so when I saw how he treated them and his work, I saw him the same way you do.
The truth is Martin wanted to be famous and he became so right after the last book when the show hit. After that he couldn't care less.

Hopefully he introduces 10 or 12 new characters so the last book needs to be like 2500 pages to even have a chance of closing any plot threads.

I've read it and to put it simply: I'm disgusted by some of the text. And especially when it was revealed that the alt-right "drama" website was involved in the research, my suspicions came true. The text is nothing but smelling coming from some pretentious intellectual dark web teenager fan-fiction writer. Unfortunately.
