Been meaning to read this one for a while, was wondering if I can read New Testament first, then read Old Testament as a prequel. Would it even make sense or would I need context from the first book?

The New Testament is the most important, you can probably read it first but you'd be lacking some context. If you read it first, then read the Old Testament, read the New Testament again to see what you missed the first time around. Jesus preached for the whole world, not just the Jews, so the main things the Old Testament provides is history and prophecies that Jesus will fulfill.

It's the best way. The old testament has large portions that are made irrelevant by the new. If you can find a version that does KJV/some modern translation/ and transliteration thats the best way to understand what's going on because some parts of the bible need the context, otherwise they will be utterly misunderstood by contemporary intentional misinterpretations, e.g. turn the other cheek, meek will inherit the earth, if one has not a sword... etc...
