Been meaning to read this one for a while, was wondering if I can read New Testament first, then read Old Testament as a prequel. Would it even make sense or would I need context from the first book?

I prefer cover to cover. The way it is laid out is probably the best way to group it.
Starting with the NT is alright. But if I was doing that, I would read the gospel of John first since it is the best standalone and can be understood by itself without reading anything else. Most of the other NT books, especially Mathew and Hebrews, are going to refer back to OT passages and stories a lot and Jesus himself quoted the OT quite a lot, but you can still follow them fine.
