Choose how I kick off winter reading this weekend

I have a decent backlog of things that don't particularly interest me should be read so you can look down on people who haven't read them and scoff at how they aren't even familiar with the classics. It's time to start ticking more off of that list and none of them sound particularly enjoyable, so I'm crowdsourcing this to !bookworms and other homosexuals.

What first? This is by no means an exhaustive list but I've narrowed it down to what seems least unappealing.

Read The Civil Servants Notebook, insane chinese novel based off their gov office politics.

"This system of bureaucracy and power worship has become our cultural tradition. It is inside our bones." The Old Leader is a fan of the "urine cure." To show loyalty, his unfortunate underling overcomes his own disgust and drinks his own urine for five years. He's rewarded with a promotion.

Rare overseether garbage take. Have you read any Shakespeare outside of Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet? If you keep in mind when it was written, it's much easier to look over what seems like pretentiousness.

easily my favorite required reading book I ever had. I'm surprised they let us read it to be honest, dude went savage mode. I had to read it summer going into 9th grade so it changed how I look at required reading from that point on. So maybe that's why they did it

Okay so I just skimmed the wiki for the Chinese story and learned that

desire for male camaraderie" is "far from a mere plotline," for it is a basic theme of this and other classic novels. She places the novel's male characters in a tradition of men's culture of mutual trust and reciprocal obligation, such as figures known as the Chinese knight-errant. Sima Qian, the Han dynasty historian, devoted a section to biographies: "Their words were always sincere and trustworthy, and their actions always quick and decisive. They were always true to what they promised, and without regard to their own persons, they would rush into dangers threatening others." She finds such figures in this and other novels, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West, all of which dramatized the "empathic emotional attraction between men who appreciate and play off against one another's complementary qualities."[16]

Licentious and treacherous women are another recurring theme. Modern critics have debated whether Water Margin is misogynistic.[17][18][19] Most beautiful women in the novel are depicted as immoral and cruel, and they are often involved in schemes against the protagonists. Among them is Pan Jinlian, the sister-in-law of Wu Song, who has later become an archetypal femme fatale and one of the most notorious villainesses of classical Chinese culture. On the other hand, the few "good" women in the story, like Sun Erniang and Gu Dasao, are not particularly noted for their beauty, or are even described as being plain or ugly. The leader of the outlaws, Song Jiang admonishes: "Any outlaw that meddles with women is contemptible."

Surely this is the rdrama choice, especially considering, uh, recent events.

Les Mis is not a thing you burger headed cute twink, it's Les Misérables.

With that being said, you can't go wrong with a french author. Both Les Misérables and Le Comte de Monte-Cristo are good but there are tons of other books by the same authors which are great too and nobody talks about in the anglosphere.

From Victor Hugo, you can read Claude Gueux, which is a short story about two gay lovers in Prison. Very easy to read and moving.

Germinal from Zola, it's pretty much everyone's introduction to Zola in France and his most famous novel, it's a great story about love and work in the mines in the 19th century.

Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, is really good too, about a woman in the 19th century who pretends to be rich but is destitute.

All three of these are realists, with strong characters and vivid descriptions of the life of commoners at that time, they're the kind of books you remember for the rest of your life.

Something else entirely, if you're looking for something a bit more light, I've been recommending the Judge Dee novels to everyone, they're fricking great. It's about a chinese detective solving murders in the 7th century, if you read it start with The Chinese Gold Murders.

I read the Oxford complete works of Shakespeare with annotations every so often and I think it's very important to have a general understanding and appreciative of the works of the Bard. It's a real zeitgeist of the times he lived in, the interpretation of history from them and some of the most well documented early pop culture. It also gives you better understanding of any performances you see in the future.

Count of Monte Cristo is a great jumping off point if you don't like literature in the first place. It's a slow start but once he escapes prison the book is a real page turner. Highly recommend it.

Leave Les Mis last until you've built up a tolerance. I love long old books but even I'm having a hard time getting through it.
